Back last October (2016) I purchased a Refurbished Nikon 18-200 from the on-line store. Well the lens was only used once before I took it out to Arizona a couple of weeks ago. When I tried to use the lens I found that something was screwed up with the focusing - it wouldn't lock on to anything (even tried it on a different body) plus it makes a funny noise. Today, I got on Nikon's repair website only to learn that the estimated repair cost was $375 + $14.50 S&H!
On Refurbished gear Nikon only offers a 90 day warranty so Buyer Beware....
Is it worth getting repair or just scrap it and move on, I have other lenses that I could use so this one is not a deal breaker.
I just checked on line pricing, and assuming that it is the Nikon Af-s Dx Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G Ed Vr Ii Lens, it is $646 from Amazon, B&H, Adorama, etc. For $400 you can get the Sigma equivalent. So repair for almost $400 and new for $400?
If it was refurbished by Nikon, do they not offer a guarantee?

They're selling for under $200 on ebay.

Does Nikon give you a warranty on refurbished? Canon's refurbished lenses and cameras have a one year warranty.

Nikon offers a 90 day warranty on refurbished lenses. His issue was AFTER the 90 days. His only other option at the time (Might) have been to purchase the refurb from Adorama, B&H or KEH but ONLY if their refurb warranty was longer. 90 days on a refurb is about right. A lot can happen to an older lens. New lenses have (from Nikon USA) a 5 year warranty automatically. If the lens was purchased from Nikon outside of the US (meaning that the purchaser lives or was visiting the country other than the USA) it would be a 1 year warranty plus the option to purchase the extra 4 years. But that is on new lenses only.

Did you not read his post?

Another one who didn't read.
The cheaper Nikon lenses should be regarded a s disposable. It will cost more to fix than to buy a refurb./ used . Adorama and B&H offer third party warranties at a cost.
Actually I was just trying to be subtle, by saying Canon gives a full year warranty on refurbished items instead of Nikon's 90 day. I guess we know which manufacturer has faith in their product or refurbishment process :-)

Unfortunately, these days, so many things are made to use and throwaway when they malfunction, making the cost of repairs a waste of money in some cases. Given that you can buy a new Sigma for not much more than the cost of repairing the Nikon lens, unless you are stuck on using just Nikon lenses, I'd say go for the new with an accompanying warranty. I think you'd be happy with the Sigma. They make good stuff.

Try a local repair service. It might be an adjustment that can be addressed. Also, make sure your camera bodies have the latest firmware.
For Nikon it's only 90 days.
