If you do plan on taking kayak photography more seriously you will want to be as comfortable as possible. Buy a set of Sospenders that will autoinflate. These will not interfere at all with the seatback. Finding a traditional vest that will mesh comfortably with the seat on your yaks can be a chore. Good luck. Yakking is fun and you can really sneak up on the wildlife.

Thanks for mentioning Sospenders...will check them out. So sick of dealing with bulky life vests that make you feel like the Michelin man sitting in a peanut shell...

I agree the Stohlquist PFD's are good also the Kokotat PFD's are good. You want to get one that does not restrict your paddling and other movements you need to be able to do while in the kayak. Make sure it fits you with a minimal amount of strap adjustments also make sure it is gender specific. It is amazing how different they make the male vs female PFD's for comfort.

Another note, once adjusted the PFD should be considered user specific until readjusted for a different user, a point we made in the USCG Aux classes, Bob.

I just won 2 photo contests with photos I took with my little waterproof Olympus. I would strongly suggest you do not tether your camera and do look for a vest that has a pocket. It's really surprising how strong a river current can be. We were kayaking the Raisin River out of Tecumseh Michigan (a BLAST by the way and you can rent kayaks there inexpensively) and I got up against a log and over I went. My camera was tethered to a chain and it snapped. The force of the current was amazing. I am grateful that I never take my camera on the water without attaching a floating strap so my daughter plucked the camera from the water (where she then had a blast taking photos of me!)
