Jules and Fran thank you both so much for your kind words here. Rest assured they are deeply appreciated...

" I really like my 7100 too. It never has failed me." Jules the D7100 used to shoot this match was in response to a soccer mom's query if her D7100 was adequate for her daughter's matches. Her primary concern was want of funds for some of the recommendations she had received (far beyond her financial means). To this end I tested the new AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3E ED VR Nikkor for soccer. This revolutionary new lens is a major paradigm shift for Nikon. The Pulse Stepper Motor drive focusing elements instantaneously i.e. far faster than the Silent Wave Motor in my AF-S 200-500mm F/5.6E and attains focus lock with speeds approaching that of the legendary AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 ED IF VR II Nikkor.

Amazing considering the street price for the AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3E ED VR Nikkor is $208 White Box and $395 with Nikon's 5 year warranty. Thus the barrier to entry into outdoor sports photography has been virtually eliminated with the advent of this new DX Pulse Stepper Focus Motor optic. Trust all who have been standing on the touch line will move forward and become empowered to captures those precious moments in your child's journey... at a 105-450mm (35mm Equivalent) the lens is indeed very capable for outdoor sports.

Caveat: The Pulse Stepper Motor variants (70-300mm & 18-55mm) only function on recent Nikon bodies (made within the past several years) meaning the D7000 isn't an option. All compatible bodies will likely need to have firmware updates. At f/6.3 wide open it may not be idea for indoor sports.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Nikon nor do I benefit in any way from endorsing their product.

"Hope she wasn't hurt." Julies she had to be assisted off the field...

Oft said the most important aspect of photographing sports is "KNOW YOUR SPORT!" there likely are no substitutes here...

Soccer Rule 12 Fouls and Misconduct
Reckless: Player has acted with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, opponent.
Excessive Force: Player has exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring opponent.
Serious Foul Play: Excessive force or brutality against opponent when challenging for the ball.

Actions which cause concern for an opponent's safety are considered a serious foul in soccer.
Especially tripping from behind when the offender has no clear option to play the ball and uses excessive force against their opponent...

The offender must be sent off and issued a red card.

In this instance there is little doubt (at least in my mind) as to the intentions of the downed player's opponent...
The score was tied when this hurtful move was used against the opposing team's top striker...
Here she is (below) driving in on the keeper to tie the score only minutes before being tripped from behind and taken down...

Thomas I really like the last shot. Girls can be rougher than the boys.
