Highly subjective, so I'll try to explain.

With two D700s and a few Nikon lenses, I have as much as I need in terms of quality and functionality; but sometimes it's too much--weight, ease of use, a camera I can grab at a moment's notice are increasingly important.

Picture quality, of course, is important.

I'll keep one or both D700s.

Can you recommend the best point and shoot that you know for under $1,000?

Thanks!

I prefer my Nikon DSLRs, but when I need a compact, I use my new Sony A6000. For the price ($550 on sale), it was just what I wanted.

In my opinion the best camera is the one you have with you when a moment you want to capture happens. I have also searched for the best "pocket" camera for the exact same reasons. I keep coming back to the IPhone or any other smart phone. It's always with me and while it does have limitations if you understand how to use it which most people don't it is capable of producing really great images. Images as good as most P&S. When I looked at P&S cameras I wanted the same features I had in my dslr but most fell short in some way obviously. You already have a dslr which gives you 100% control but for those times when you either don't have the dslr with you or don't want to lug all the gear around a smart phone is as good a choice as any P&S. I would suggest while you are searching for a P&S do a little research and see if your smartphone will meet your expectations. You could save the money and put it towards the dream lens you have always wanted. I know this does not answer the question you asked but thought it was worth consideration if you already have a smartphone. Good luck in your search. I look forward to what others have to say.

The LUMIX series of superzooms......they fit in the pocket, big zooms, fast, etc. not that expensive.

Many will be suggesting Olympus and Panasonic Micro4/3 cameras. Others will tout their Sonys.
Going against all that overhyped and overheated tide, I recommend you check out the Ricoh GRII - well within your budget.
Small, light, truly compact, a full range of customization options and - most importantly - a great lens.

In addition to my Nikons, I use a Canon PowerShoot 1200. 12mp, 4x zoom, viewfinder, AA batteries. Newer models available. And very reasonably priced.

Hi Brookie, from the UK, where, although we're 3 weeks into April, the weather looks like it's going to have a "wee bite back" this coming week.

You asked for suggestions for "weight, ease of use, and something I can grab at a moment's notice", so here's my offering ...... I'm sure you can research these cameras easily, so I'm not going to tell you where to look.

If you want some zoom - 1) Panasonic LX100 - 2) Fuji X-E2s with the superb XF 18-55 f2.8-4 lens.

If you're happy to zoom with your feet - the Fuji X100T.

There ya' go ! Take a good look !

I agree with the phone answer. And with the available Apps for better control like Camera + and others, you get the control you're used to with a SLR and many have the ability to capture in RAW. In my search, I've seen much emphasis in "filters" or "Scene manipulators" which would amuse the casual shooter, but with manual controls, my iphone SE (because of the size and 6Plus features) is my choice. Mr. Google can help you find the one for you.

I've looked through the thread and have not discovered what you mean by "point and shoot".

For "ease of use" (familiar controls), consider craggycrosser's advice (for SLR and DSLR users, these cameras are like "old friends").

For "grab at a moments notice" (pocketability), add one of the Sony RX100__'s to your list of considerations.

The best "carry around" camera for me is my iPhone 7plus and Top Canera2 app. I own a Canon 6d, 5dMKII and a complete Sony a6000 outfit plus lenses for my Canons from a 14mm to a 100-400 Zoom. More fun shooting with my iPhone.

I don't use one, but this is an excellent statement on behalf of the cell-phone camera. Good (experienced?) photographers can make some excellent images with them. Thanks for posting this.

I'm going to second that suggestion of the Ricoh GR II.
I have a GR III and remain very impressed with it.

My other suggestion would be the beloved Fuji X100T.
