Nikon D7100, Tamron f/2 60 mm Macro

First attempt at focus stacking (Images 1,2, and 4), Used a rail. It is harder than I thought with wind blowing, sun moving in and out, change in FOV with the rail, etc. Image 3 came out horrible with stacking. Used PS cc for stacking.

These are nice close-up photos. None are close enough to be 1:1 magnification, which is the definition of true macro-photography.

Thanks, I get that now. I used a 1:1 macro lens but I wasn't at the closest focus distance which makes it far from 1:1. The good thing is I learned that there is a close up section here on UHH that I wasn't subscribed to (which now I am!!).

Thanks Sailorsmom!! Focus Stacking is taking multiple images with each one having a different area of the photo in focus. This is used in Macro or close ups because the area in focus with macro lenses is so narrow (mm's sometimes) you need multiple frames to get the whole thing in focus. I think I used about 14 frames for those. I used Photoshop CC to stack these but there are better software programs out there to do it.

When you read how to do it, it sounds very simple but when you give it a try, it is far harder than it sounds. It definitely takes a little trial and error to get a flow down that works well. I did this with a rail (an instrument with a screwworm drive to move the camera back and forth in fine increments: I got a real cheap one from China but it worked well albeit a bit cumbersome compared to the expensive ones). It can also be done by just changing the focus, starting from the front and working your way to the back. Each method has its ups and downs concerning focus breathing, change in perspective, and magnification as you move or focus closer.
