Why Do You Print?

Ok, some of my best shots populate the walls of my residence. The walls are now full. Other than the "one off" gift, the question remains, Why Do You Print? Apparently I lack the masochistic tendencies that come from dealing with paper of any sort, my preferred display option is the 55" Sony TV. Have mastered a browser (ACDSee 14), an editor (PSP x4), and the best random slideshow program I've seen over the years (VuePrint Pro), free now by the way. Dell Widi equipped laptop makes me the master of my universe and feeds all 6 of the HD TVs. I'm eagerly awaiting responses from the ugly crowd.

I stopped printing years ago and send out to a local printing service occassionally when needed. My printers were not used enough to keep the cartridges dry and ready.

But I'm still working on how to use my 55" LCD more directly vs buring a DVD slide show.

I'm not familiar with Dell Wiki and would like to learn more.

Because 50 years from now, the prints will be here and all those ones and zeros will - in all likelihood - be on unreadable media. I fear there will be a lost generation of images - all the images on digital media instead of prints is just a terrible idea.

This is not to say everything shot needs printed - we take SO many images now. But certainly a selection - especially of family images - needs to be printed so it will be here for your kids, grandkids, great grandkids. Thanks goodness my parents took photos - cheap cameras and crappy prints, but I know what my grandparents looked like when they were younger.

I print because that is what real photography is.

The captain has spoken with great wisdom.

If I see a shoe box of old fotos, I eagerly shuffle through them. I don't care whose they are. I get bored of even the idea of looking at my own hard drive, let alone someone elses. In 25 years when most of us old guys are gone, Our grandkids will look at ALL those old harddrives we so carefully cherised so much, and probably just toss'em into the garbage as they riffle through our estates. The more inquisitive ones will at least slam them at a wall to see what is inside them, like an old 8 track tape.
I print for the sheer joy of wasting ink and paper. I eagerly await the arrival of a new type of paper even more so than a new lens. To create a 17" x 48" print of a beautiful landscape is truely awesome. To me printing is the fun in photography. Some let a printshop experience this joy for them. In the case of Costco, nobody has any fun. To others, printing is strictly a mechanical process by which they weigh whether it costs to much or not? The print process is truely the sculptors clay and there are not a lot of sculptors left. Years ago I did all my B&W and sent my color stuff to Sunset Color Lab in Hollywood. Now I can print my own. I enjoy getting the aspect ratio just right, picking the size of my borders then looking through my papers to see which one will have the perfect texture, sheen and thickness for that particular image, them watching the printer perform its' magic.
Ahhh Yesss, that's why I print !

I've been collating family history in photo's. Some 100+ years old. With digital technology one can preserve & restore images of deteriorated condition. They eventually die but dig'l gives another generation or 2.I only print if it's a special pic or for a gift, but with a large screen It's great to view them occasionally or during my work on them. They give a family history guts. All that data gets boring but pic's give it life. My rellies, all over the world, are stoked at what i've done. Some live & have lived in USA. Still lots I'd lovee to contact in both US & Canada.

Yep.

I send out to print what I really like of what I've shot...there is something "different" about a real print vs a monitor viewing.

I too remember the shoebox full of pictures of my relatives when they were young...I still have some and love them.

I have a lot of good (unprinted)work on Zip drive cartridges. Shame my Zip drive no longer works! There is a moral there somewhere.

Printing is the goal for my images. Of course I love to share on the web but to me there is nothing better than to see an image I took printed and looking the way I want it to. It's the icing on the cake, it's why I shoot and they make nice gifts. I recently gave one of my images to a friend for his birthday and he called me and said it meant so much to him that I would give such a personal gift that I made just for him. Made me feel great.

I print because frames are cheaper than monitors and easier to hang on the wall.

Nothing like holding a print in your hands. Without the print you have 0's and 1's nothing else.

When I started printing my digital files it changed my whole preception of using a digital camera; this is probably an effluence of spending 64 years in the darkroom.

I never hang my own work at home, but my walls are full of photographs. I feel strongly that photographers should collect photograhs. In fact recently on a trip to the east coast I brought home 3 images and another on order. Now to find a place for them.

Printing is the soul of photography. In a darkroom the thrill of seeing a print develop was one of the great joys of photography. Now seeing a print emerge from the printer is equal joy with the bonus of not being in a safelighted room but in the light.
