I've been playing with my new 60D and notice that the sound of taking the photo (shutter sound) is more like a klunk rather than a click! Very much like a very slow shutter speed. Since the XTi is my only other experience with DSLR I'm wondering if this is normal. I would expect the sound to be less. (I thought I posted this question last night but cannot find it in the forum)

You could always take it to a camera shop and let them listen. If they sell Canon, they know what to expect.

I noticed the same thing when i got my 5D mark II...the shutter sound is definitely like a klunk.

Previously I had a T2i.

It's just different.

Thanks I have a good camera repair business that I trust and will probably do that. I could just take lots of photos till the new klunk becomes an old familiar sound!

Thanks again. I don't know how I ever got along without UHH. Everyone is great. I guess I'll keep playing with it. It's only been 3 days!

Plus, the sound is different when you click the shutter release in live view mode. It's as though it is on a time lapse.

We have four Nikons in our house, and they all have different sounds.

even though i am a canon man all the way the shuter release on a nikon is quieter in my opinion.I also have the 60d and find it to be noiser than my 30d or my 20d.

CharlieBoy,

I noticed the same thing when I got my 60D. My other camera, XSi, is much quieter. I was about to take it back to the camera shop where I had purchased it. I was sure I had got a lemon. Then, I read this thread and learnt that this kind of shutter speed sound (klunk) is typical of the 60D.

BTW, is this how your 60D sound?

I have a Canon 60D and a Rabel XTI - I think what you hear is the reflex mirror flapping sound. I have noticed this also and yes you have aready posted this same question somewheres here.

I don't know the camera well, but a "klunk" sounds more like a mirror than a shutter. Compared to a split beam or other camera without a moving mirror, the sound will be much louder.

thank you Reinr, jerryc41,al_davis, Ziza, Bangee5, Bill41, rpavich, and les_stockton.

I'm going to let this one rest. A "klunker" it is but you'd think Canon would lessen the noise. I'll scare all the wildlife away with my first "klunk"

thanks everyone!

There is a custom setting, under III I think, that lets you throw the mirror out of the way first. I use it for night shots to lessen vibration, but it also splits the noise. Takes two clicks to shoot though.

Virtually all DSLRs make no 'noise' with a shutter release, per se. The main noise you hear is the mirror flipping up out of the way. The other noise is a digitally produced sound that the mfg's add so it sounds like a 'real' camera.

Try it. If you have a mirror lock up feature, use it. Lock the mirror up. Then press the shutter. The latter 'sound' is, for the most part, fake. Consider it a DSLR ringtone.
