Any camera with live view that uses the sensor to send a live image to an EVF or LCD exposes the sensor to the sun if it is in the FOV. I have taken many sunsets with my Sony SLT without damaging the sensor. It is not full overhead sun, but I have also taken many shots with the sun peaking around a building, a church spire, or foliage and no damage.
Usually if the sun is in the viewfinder it's only for a few seconds. You won't want to set your camera down on a table facing up and walk away.

We are looking at the future of Pro imageing here - it is just a matter of time .......till they do.
Only if it comes with pixel enlargement software Larry :)

Agreed, and since I don't use a lens cap I would never put it on a table facing up anyway. When the camera is slung around my neck or over my shoulder I don't really worry about whether it is facing the sun or not as the weight of the lens generally points the camera toward the ground anyway. When placed on a table with the lens parked at full wide angle and focussed at infinity the FOV could catch some afternoon sun, so I try not to have it facing south. I guess this all says that the sensors, like our eyes, can take some fairly focussed sunlight for brief periods of time without permanent damage.

The embargo Sony imposed on reviewers for the a9 was just lifted the other day.
Some awesome reviews on Sony a9 on YouTube and the Internet. The camera is just mind blowing!!
Cholly is right not just a sports/wildlife camera. Although watching a lot of the reviews it will make an awesome sports camera, even with the current lack of high mm prime lenses, because many sports are short range, i.e. hockey, basketball, volleyball, tennis, figure skating, track and field, boxing, karate, etc...
Also Sony hasn't been marketing this for event/wedding photographers (I really think they aren't because of the cost of the camera), but already a ton of reviewers are saying this would camera would be fantastic for weddings and events.
My opinion is that they need something about $1000 less expensive (and maybe a few less features) to really have a killer offering for event photography. I think the A7III, A7RIII, or A9R will probably be that camera. They really do need to get the cost down a bit though -- if they do my prediction is that they will be #1 in event/wedding photography in just a few years.
Personally I'm holding out and waiting a bit. If the a9 was $3500 I'd pull the trigger, but I'm going to wait a bit.

The a99ii is about $1,000 cheaper. I might eventually get it when I can afford full frame rather than having to buy an adapter for my current lenses or buy all new ones. In the interim, I'm considering replacing my a77 with an a77ii...much more realistically within reach for me considering current income and expenses. reviewers seem to complain about the video portion (maximum aperture, etc) but I rarely shoot video so it probably wouldn't bother me.

The A77II is a BIG advance over the A77, which is a very good camera.
And for $1300 LESS than the A9 you get fewer frames per second (12 compared to 20) but greater resolution (42 mp compared to 24 mp) and only 8 blackout free frames per second compared to the 20 with the A9. So there are a few trade offs to be sure.
The A99II is a REALLY powerful camera with EXCELLENT image quality. It has been overshadowed by the mind blowing specs of the A9, but it's STILL a killer camera, one that MOST of us can reasonably aspire to.

I totally agree the A99II is a completely awesome camera!! If I had A-Mount glass I'd totally be there.
I'm a huge fan of Sony. Yes, great days for Sony fans!! I'm still going to wait for the A9II, A7RIII, or A7III or whatever they are going to call it. I have no A-Mount glass, and already have some Full frame E-mount glass.
