I'm trying to find a decent sturdy tripod without having to spend a fortune. I already have a Manfrotto 190XDB with a 496RC2 ball head but it gets a bit of a quiver up in the wind and when it gets a slight knock, mainly when I'm using my 150-500mm lens. I'd still like it to have a ball head.
I'd like to think I can get something reasonable for up to AUD$500...
I've searched on Google but everyone reckons theirs are the best...also there are so many it's hard to pick one. So hopefully uses of tripods can give me a few suggestions.
Cheers,
Ron.

Sorry, I also have a Manfrotto I don't like, mainly because it is hard for me to use and the Pistol grip is too wimpy. So now I have two Gitzo Tripods and three Gitzo Heads. Unfortunately Tripod and Cheap does not equate. Look for used GOOD STUFF!

I didn't say I don't like my Manfrotto, it's great but just not big enough when I use my big lens. I would never buy the ones with the pistol grip, they're toys...I was actually after some positive feedback, not a whole load of negatives...If you can't help with my query, why bother to reply...

I guess I should have left it with my first thought, "Unfortunately Tripod and Cheap does not equate."

No you shouldn't have bothered at all if you have nothing constructive to say...

I’d been using an old heavy Vivitar aluminum tripod for my heaviest 35mm cameras and lens, but prefer wood and recently bought a near-new condition Zone VI tripod, legs only, for $165. With a Bogen 3055 ball head it’s rock solid under my 500 f/5.6 Sport-Kilar and Nikon F5, which together weigh about 9 1/2 pounds. It’s basically a surveyor’s tripod, which you might find cheap. They’re not light weight, but they are solid!

My Manfrotto carbon fiber set of legs has served me very well with lenses up to the 80-400 Nikon zoom. It was about $360 I think. Purchase without the head a put a really good ball head on it.

I thought I did indirectly, "used Gitzo equipment [from ebay]." Still pricey but much less than new. Then get what ever YOU like for $500 or less. Why bother asking at all? You have to use it. This is typical for questions about finding less expensive tripods on the UHH, usually a lot of answers critiquing the asking for not accepting their fate that good tripods are really expensive. I'd hate to see the price for a studio Majestic Tripod these days! Wow, you used a . I virtually never post those. I'm one of the nicer people with a hard line on Tripods. You are lucky none of the really nasty ones have answered you. May be they are all on a sugar high from Easter Candy. Anyway, peace and next time I can be more helpful about choices for advice on choices and good deals on Lenses or Cameras. You may have gotten some viable suggestions. Good luck

A good, sturdy tripod is not cheap but, they will last and be worth something when you are done with them. Check out the Gitzo 35XX series, they are repairable, reliable and very sturdy. You can find deals on ebay and other sources.

Ron The tripod you are looking for does not exist< or I have not found one yet. If you get one that don't have the quiver when bumped it will be so heavy you wouldn't want to carry it. I use a Gitzo GT5561SGT and a Wimberly gimbal head while it don't quiver in the wind it will when bumped.Your Manfrotto190XDB combo is about the best you can do in your price range.
I do have a tripod that is free if you pay the shipping. http://www.pbase.com/manglesphoto/image/110694021 weight approx.40#

Feisol CT-3472LV Elite Rapid Carbon Fiber with leveling center column. A little more money than you're specifying, but OMG ! Maybe can get a better price.

Thank you to those of you who replied with some intelligent answers...if some bothered to read my original post they would have read that I already have a good tripod for what I do...it cost me $198 including the ball head several years ago and does an admirable job with my short lenses...my request was for something just a bit better in the $500 price range that would help with my big lens...I was never asking for a professional studio type tripod, just a better one than what I have. if there is no such tripod, which I seriously doubt then so be it...

Gets my vote as I have the three section CT-3372. My Manfrotto 190CXPro 3 couldn't handle much of a breeze.

BTW,you sound a bit down under this morning!

I have the Benro TMA48CL Long Series 4 Mach3 Carbon Fiber Tripod and the Benro TMA47AXL Extra Long Series 4 Mach3 Aluminum Tripod. I use the aluminum unit indoors so I can do overhead shots as it's quite a bit taller but both tripods are very sturdy and solidly built.

Ron, I also was looking to upgrade my tripod and got good advice from DrNikon, a member of this forum. Check on the FotoPro TS-83C. It is in your price range and very sturdy.

Good luck, Bob
