The best (ease of use and most predictable results) for your Canon is any of Canon's Speedlite flashes. They increase in power and function and cost.
I suggest you look at the Canon 430EX II as a reasonable cost to performance model.
You can buy one new on line for around $225. Hard to beat between performance and seamless integration with your camera.

The "best" flash is subjective. The best Canon Speedlite might be the 600EX-RT, but at $600 you are spending more than your camera costs today and probably buying more flash than your current experience warrants (I'm just assuming that based on your question.)

A canon flash on a canon camera is probably your best bet. But there are some other good ones out there, Metz comes to mind. You could probably get a nice used 580EX for reasonable $$. Check out Adorama or B&H's used equipment on their websites. Nowadays, pretty much all the reputable manufacturers of flash have ones that play nice in the sandbox together. But as always, you get what you pay for. Stay away from really cheap flashes, for a lot of reasons, they are just cheap.

I have a canon and a Nissin DI622 mark 2. It does pretty good and has exposure compensation of 2+ or minus 2 and other modes like slave manual auto and wireless. It has a wide angle diffuser and an reflector plate that slide out of the top of the flash and tilt and swivel. You might look them up.

Whilst I am happy to consider third party lenses, I have always, when buying a new body, bought a contempory flashgun from the same manufacturer (In my case Nikon). I have always worried about electrical currents flowing to & fro, with the potential to fry either item. It might be balderdash, but at least I sleep easier. In any case ALWAYS switch off both camera AND flash, prior to mounting / demounting.

I would go with the 430 ex as a starter. I just got one about two months ago and exceeds my expectation. I have not had the time to really get use to it yet due to circumstances. But it does every thing it supposed to do if you take to learn. Just read on how to use, watch you tube or go to strobist web site
for tips.

There are many choices for flash; Yongueo, Opteka, Nikon, Metz, Sunpak, etc...

But the one that is most "brainless" is the 430EXII...it can be controlled via the camera's menu, it will do ETTL, and it's reliable.

It's also not THAT expensive.

If you aren't well-versed in manual flashing, then I'd recommend a 430EXII.

I love my 430EXII with my Canon 7D.
A little heavy with a 7D if you have to carry it all day, but I never use it that long.
