The secret to sun flares is to stop your lens down as far as it will go (larger f-number). If you can partially block the sun behind something, that helps a lot. Here's one form my archive.

ISO 100, 10mm (yeah, I cropped it a lot), f/22, 1/125 sec.

I've had to go back a couple of years to get a sun flare. Hiking on the Sunset Trail on my annual vacation spot. This tiny Gulf Island boasts all of about 32 people year round so you can find lots of time for peace and quiet.
