I attended this short, three hour training on using manual mode on the DSLR. The training was given by Okello Dunkley at
http://www.dslrworkshops.comAlhtough brief, it was well presented and very informative. He's doing training across the country this summer, both on basics and Lightroom 3/4.
He has Take Your Camera Off Program Mode! Part I and Part II
classes. Is that the class you took (part I)?
How was it presented? Classroom or was it hands on?

Sorry to take so long in getting back to you. The class I took was part one of shooting Manually. I'm signed up for part two in August.
Each session is three hours and for a beginner is informative. Given that it's relatively inexpensive, I thought it worthwhile. I'm curious to see what's given in part two.
The instructor covered DOF, WB, minimally how you could use both shutter and aperture priority, but then went into using manual altogether, even for focus. He also covered the benefits of shooting only in RAW mode, and had excellent examples of how much more information is maintained with a RAW file vs. JPG.
