With dslr sensor sales falling, sony had to do something to absorb the capacity of their silicon fab investment.
My only worry with sony is they tend to hit a market, skim off the easy money and then move on,
leaving a bunch of orphans and a fragmented market..

On the other hand, if it wasn't for Sony sensors there might be no DSLRs except for Canon.

It’s official: In the US Sony did surpass Nikon and is now on 2nd place in the FF system camera market! It’s Canon that is still the king of the market (Their DSLR still do rule the Amazon sales ranking). But the day will arrive Sony will take Canon’s throne….

Here is the Press text:

SAN DIEGO, April 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Electronics – a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has announced today that their continued growth has vaulted them into the #2 overall position in the U.S. full-frame interchangeable lens camera market. 1

Sony’s interchangeable lens cameras and lenses have seen record sales in 2017, in particular within the U.S. full-frame camera market, where they have experienced double-digit growth (+23%) 2 compared to the same period last year. The popularity of key models including α7RII and α7SII has been paramount to this success.

Additionally, Sony’s rapid growth has helped to drive growth of the overall full-frame interchangeable lens camera market compared to the same period last year. Without Sony’s contributions, the full-frame market would be facing a slight decline. 3

“Our commitment to the industry is stronger than ever,” said Neal Manowitz, VP of Digital Imaging at Sony North America. “We are always listening to our customers, combining their feedback with our intense passion for innovation to deliver products, services and support like no other.”

Actually, Sony's camera division is one of its smallest units. Sony's biggest bread winner is its gaming division. Their recent financial problems are due to foreign exchange rates and finally recognizing that they paid way too much for Columbia Studios back in 1989. Sales for the Camera division were essentially flat reflecting less units, but higher priced cameras - eg its A6xxx and A7X lines. Sony's sensor / semiconductor business is booming. With Toshiba warning that it unlikely to survive its current financial difficulties, expect Sony to get a boost in its TV / Audio sales.

It has been said "There are lies, bald faced lies and statistics.". Does this mean that Sony is selling more FF cameras than Nikon or does it mean that they are making more money than Nikon? 2017 is only three months old and any spike in sales may be temporary.

Ahhhh.... if you check the links provided above, you will see that Sony STILL makes and sells TVs, pro movie cameras, and cameras that take Canon lenses.

You can SURELY buy them, and have lots of company because Sony products in those segments are some of the best selling in the business.
