I have this heavy duty tripod vintage 1970"s (manufact. in ny ,ny) that has a panhead and would like to know if a nest 530h gimbal head can be attached to it by removing the pan head. Find attached photos! Thanks!

My recommendation would be no, because of no base for the head. Also, I would guess this tripod only has a 1/4" stud to mount the head to, and that is just not enough support for the head and it's associated load.

Why can't you just lock it down and add the gimbal with the regular screw attachment?
That panhead will lock down tight!! So what if it has extra height?
If the gimbal has a 3/8 screw, just find a replacement screw.

Great suggestion!! I thought about doing this but I thought the head might be a bit unstable doing it this way. Thanks again!!

For projects like this I always keep a roll of duct tape close by.

I have a real tripod with a vanguard bh200 head on it,which i have been using for the heavy lens. But the ballhead does not have enough panability for bird shots etc that's why I have a gimbal head on the way and i did not want to order a new tripod for the gimbal head. The star d pro is a real hvy tripod and the suggestion of installing the gimbal head on the panhead was a good one. What is a real tripod anyway?
