I have my son my SX-30 several years ago and he brought it to me saying it won't take pictures.
I checked all the settings, the and sd card, and batteries, no problem found.
When I shoot a picture in any mode I get only 3 vertical blue bars on the screen. On video I got sound but no picture. The sd card records pictures about the correct since but the display is black.
Advice please.
Depends on how much you can afford; take it to a reliable camera shop for diagnosis.
This is the only advise I can give having just gotten into Digital photography myself this past year. I am of the old school having several 35 mm cameras over the years that used film.

How old is the camera? I would have to believe that either the sensor or some valued device that serves it is gone. Good luck. I think you're best bet is to just go buy a replacement camera.
If you are getting the photo to record on the SD card but your screen is as you say it is I would say you either have a bad screen or a bad processor that controls the screen. If it's worth it to you, try to get it repaired but that might cost you more than a new SX60.
I would not spend money on it. There are so many newer, better cameras, both new and used available.
Sounds like it's time for a newer camera.
Thanks for the replies, agrees with what I think. The camera is about 9 years old.

There is an old chinese saying (that I just made up) that covers the situation "el tosso". Also an Italian word--garbagio. Seriously- as above the cost of repair woulf be more than a new, and better, camera.

You can buy a used SX30IS from Amazon for about $200. Not that I would recommend doing that. But, getting it repaired does not appear to be cost-effective.

On eBay, I've seen them going for even less than that.
Before getting it repaired, I would look into getting a used but functioning SX30. Or maybe consider buying a different camera altogether.

I have a very similar problem with a LumixZS 40 that I recently bought. Suddenly my screen is black with a couple of streaks. I can use the EVF to compose the shot (more or less 🙄), but can't use the screen to review what I've done. If I download the SD card, viola, there is my photo! Initial repair estimate was $150, so I new my budget on a Canon t6 kit. Sure wish I had just had the LUMIX fixed!
I'd look at something else and toss it as others have said. Canon under warranty doesn't seem to want to fix the SX series at all. I had a SX50 that offered AF issues and they just replaced stating they don't fix them, only replace.

Don't worry, it will make a really nice paper weight.

Agree, like the pet canary when a kid, bury it in the back yard with a little marker. "Good and Faithful SX30... Stroke took you away"

Do an autopsy as show on You Tube. Ask Mr Google: "you tube sx50 stuck lens" and he will show you many videos of dissection. A great thing to do.
I converted an EBay old Canon G-2 to be IR. Took me three times to get it to function. There are many ribbon multi wire connection that must be embedded properly. The act of removal and insertion polishes them for better connection.
Your SX30 may have developed an oxidized connection and while it is a gamble, give it a try. [use card board with holes punched in to hold the screws as they would be placed on the camera, the differ in length and size. Small screwdriver set will be needed]
If it does not work, use the Native American dry in the sun for the parts .... birds and squirrels will take the parts to the nest and the SX30 parts will be loved. The final reward for 9 years of service.
PS: I dropped one of my SX-50and it has a "stuck lens error... some quiet day I will follow the you tube and fix the problem, I hope?!
