810 cropping vs teleconverter

I was wondering if anyone has tested / compared image's from the 810 cropped to a given size vs. using a teleconverter to achieve the same size?
I use a 1.4 teleconverter often on a D600 and got to thinking if the quality of a cropped image from a large sensor (810) is as good or better than one with a teleconverter used on the same camera, I could then leave one piece of gear at home. And if you're good at reading between the lines, you can see I'm looking for an excuse to buy an 810!

Thanks,

All I can say is that I have an 800E, and I can truly crop the beejeebers out of an image and still end up with something that looks beautiful as a 13x19 print. Unless you pay BIG bucks, your teleconverter will soften your image. When I say "BIG bucks" I mean Nikon, Nikon, and Nikon as the first three manufacturer choices.

What lens and what TC are you planning on using? I've gotten good results with Nikon and third party TCs, but the TCs are not equivalent, and one TC/lens combo maybe different from another, even if the TCs are the same magnification. The 810's resolution may expose faults that the larger pixels of the 600 can't see.

I use an 810 and crop at will often with superb results!

I wanted to limit the comparison to the 810 Sensor. Cropping vs. teleconverter. For argument sake make it the best 1.4 teleconverter money can buy.

I had the TC14E II for several years and used it on the D800E and D810. It all depends on the lens. With the Nikon 300mm f2.8 VR II it worked great.

But overall I prefer cropping. Sold both the TC, lens and D800E.

I did that exact test on several cameras, including the D810.

Spoiler alert - use the TC :)

Thanks Steve,

Your info was most helpful with much to think on.
Unfortunately the debate between the 750 and the 810 purchase rages on!

Thanks again!

I have a D810 and it amazes me when I need to crop. Awesome detail and I have had prints made up to 20x30 without the loss of detail. Go for it you will not be disappointed...

I never thought to test my D600. When my thoughts/gas turned to the D810 I started looking for things that would help sell the large sensor camera vs. the 750. Comparing the 750 to the 810 is "apples and Oranges" but Both are great, so I'm looking for that deciding factor that will push me over the edge.

Thanks Steve. Great article and very helpful. I am sitting here wrestling with the decision to buy either the 1.4 or 2X for my Canon lenses. Yours is the first article that is so definitive in the use of a tele-converter, enough so, to give me the push I needed.

Buy the D500 cause you will end up with more EFFECTIVE PIXELS than with the D810.

Speaking from a Canon perspective, I recently purchased a full-frame 6D, and I can crop like crazy and get a create photo - I think better than using an extender. So I am not feeling an urge to go buy one.

I'm thinking that if you tested it yourself, there would be no need to ask others for their results. Not everyone has the same lens and teleconverter that you do.
