I use a "decent tripod". Gitzo Series 5 tripods do fit that category. The leg wraps are essential, both in summer and winter. If the tripod goes out the door with you it needs leg wraps. There is no point in getting along without something that useful and also that inexpensive.

In addition to the previously stated advantages, leg wraps also offer a degree of protection against bumps/scrapes to the legs.

Well, if you paid large sum of money for a very good tripod such as a systematic Gitzo they keep the upper leg from getting all sorts of scraps and nicks on the legs, besides they are comfortable for carrying the tripod on your shoulder. I bought the lenscoat brand, very good, with Velcro fastening the wraparound the leg.

Leg wraps are very important in a number of cases, at least for my use. Outdoors I almost always use a carbon fiber Gitzo Series 5 tripod. The leg wraps cushion it for carrying, and in cold weather make it much easier to handle.

The very nice wraps that I have are made from sections of foam pipe insulation, with a wrap of black duct tape at each end.

Several of my pods came with foam cushions on them. On some, I too used pipe insulation but secured them with tight fitting O-rings at several places. Had tape originally but the adhesive oozed out over time and made the cushions sticky, especially in warm weather.

I have very small hands and found that the gitzo leg wraps made it very difficult to handle the tripod. Fortunately, I live in a warm climate so the cold isn't an issue, and I really don't find that I need or want them.

I used the foam pipe insulation and used silicone tape. It sticks to itself with no adhesive.

Interesting. Do you find used tape better than new?

My tripod has foam on one leg, makes it easy to carry, it came with the tripod. I dont see a need to put it on any other legs.

Yes, in Alaska. The only leg wraps I need in California are for my legs so they don't get sun burnt. I'm sure it looks nuts to Alaskans, but many people in So. California, especially LACo and the OC run around even during the Winter and on rainy days wearing shorts! Is it true I could get stuck to my old metal Gitzo tripod in snow if I touched the bare metal?

You might be surprised to know that Fairbanks, and virtually all of Interior Alaska, has high temps in the 90's every summer. Barrow, where I live of course does not get that hot. But while Fairbanks with annual precipitation of 10 inches is an arid region about as dry as Tucson AZ, Barrow gets less than 5 inches per year and is a true desert.

The value of leg wraps on a tripod is not limited to cold weather. The wraps protect an expensive tripod, they also make life easier on your shoulder when carrying the tripod. It costs less than $10 and is well worth the 3 or 4 times that paid by some.

Lenscoat makes good ones. I've got 2 sets for my tripods.
