A Different Approach (for me, at least)

I had a bit of a brainstorm that I thought might produce an image that would would be similar to painting. I cranked up the ISO on my Sony A57 to a range That would give me a very noisy image (12,800). I figured that if I denoised the image and did some light and contrast manipulation, I might end up with something different. This is the result of my first attempt. I realize that this has probably been done before but maybe not.

Interesting to say the least. I like what it did at the pixel level to give it that unsharp sharpness (that's the only way I know how to describe it). I may go venturing in that direction just to see what I might create with my little ole T3i.

Would be helpful if you included the unedited image with the edited version. :)

Here is the original as it came from the camera.

With a painting, the shapes and edges are typically clearly defined but the textures less so, and subtle gradations of colour are less likely to be accurately reproduced. To get a painterly effect manually I'd probably try lots of edge-based sharpening together with lots of de-noise, and I'd probably keep the contrast high and the colour palette simple. The wonderful thing is the original textures and colours aren't all that relevant, so noisy jpegs from old, cheap cameras aren't a no-no.

Your recipe is just about identical to the post processing that I did to the image of the tree. Thanks for your response.

to further enhance this effect... Here's what I do in Lightroom - pull contrast and clarity sliders all the way left. take highlights down a bit bring exposure down and contrast down in the detail panel raise noise reduction all the way up.

Actually, it took me a while before I even noticed I had included it in my photo.

OH, now I can see the results from the original, the editing version is clearly more appealing, nice job Streets.
