Mirror Mirror

Today's post is an assignment and discussion to follow, but before I give up the story let's get on with the assignment.

Step 1 -
Find a solid background with some even lighting and take a selfie, or have someone take your picture.

Step 2 -
Open the image in post production and mirror it. Left becomes right and right becomes left.

Step 3 -
Compare the two images and decide which one you like and why then explain why.
- You don't have to post them here, but it will make the discussion that much more interesting.

The discussion will follow the first few brave souls who join in. Enjoy! S-

You first!
And posting must be required.
Photography is about IMAGES!

Evaluating an image of ourselves like this will be flawed because we're used to seeing a flipped image every time we look in the mirror.

I was well into adulthood before I realised that having a parting on the side that mine is on (the left) puts me in a minority. It hadn't registered with me that I was in that minority because I don't see a parting on the left when I look in the mirror. I see what the majority of people have - a parting on the right.

Is this going to lead to the grand exposee that the right side of out face is more attractive than the left side?

Along these lines, and I have used this technique to some reasonable success is determining the dominant side of someone's face. Take a photo straight on with even lighting. Copy and create a new layer from each side of the face, this has to be done precisely. Then mirror each of the copies. Then paste a left mirrored to left and conversely a right mirrored to right. One of the constructed faces will appear a tad abnormal, the other more normal. The more normal will reveal the dominant side of the face and indicate which should be predominantly featured in the portrait.

This was taken a few years ago when I was young and fresh-faced . I can say with conviction that I find them equally repulsive, but the flip looks unsettlingly odd in a way that I can't pinpoint. And they're proof of the usual advice concerning portraits which is to NOT shoot them in strong sunlight.

Straight.
Straight....

Flipped.

It took me a few minutes to get past taking a selfie, but with a 'little prompting' here's my updated passport photo... S-

And since the secrets out I thought I'd open this to a discussion.

I came across this Why don't people like having their picture taken? and thought it would be an interesting experiment.

What do you think, and more importantly what's your experience? S-

I think it's a common trait. Not only do I not like photo booths, I feel incredibly silly when I'm sitting in them - and it shows. Gorilla with a headache is the usual look that I end up with.

That most assuredly has all the characteristics of a passport photo!

Geez I hate pictures of me! Why do you think I'm the family photographer?

I did the best I could with what I had to work with, no camera and not even a cell phone, but there was a laptop handy and it had a camera built in so while checking my email, I clicked the camera button and here I am, sweaty and tired, in the midst of a brutal day of helping my son move out of his house, the biggest mess you've ever seen in 90 degree Mississippi heat. First is the photo I took, and second is the flip.

I like the first one better (the as-shot), it seems more normal somehow, if there is such a thing as normal.

It makes sense, but it's interesting we like the mirror shot better and yet the world sees the real us. Thank you for participating! S-

This is an extension of a point made at our club by a 'trainer of judges' who suggested looking at your image upside down. Surprising what can be seen from an unusual angle.
