NIKON D3300 vs. Nikon 5500
I do have a D3300 and was looking into a D5500 as an upgrade, is it worthwhile?
I'm just learning and would like your opinion.
Thanks.

Budget allowing, look at the D7200.

I agree with this. When you get into the D7xxx series is when you will really be stepping up. The D3xxx and D5xxx series Nikons have a pentamirror viewfinder. The D7xxx series and above Nikons have a pentaprism viewfinder. The glass prism inside give a larger, slightly brighter view when using the viewfinder. The U1 and U2 settings are on mode dial are really nice. You can store frequently used settings and recall them in a second. The pop-up flash can be used as a commander for off-camera speedlights. It has dual memory card slots that can be configured different ways. It also has front and rear command dials. That's nice to have when using manual mode. The front dial will set the aperture and the rear dial will set the shutter speed.
I upgraded from the 3300 to the 5500. The 7200 was uncomfortable to hold for my small hands. I am learning to use the touch screen as well. To me it was a good move.
The D5500 would definitely be an upgrade from the D3300, but as JR45 suggested, the D7200 would really step up your game; and a refurb body could still keep it in your budget.

Use your title precisely as it appesrs here as a Google search. Wondermous results!
Last spring, I purchased the D5500 while my friend went for the D7200 and we compared equipment and results, extensively. As long as the lenses are the same, the quality of the pictures from each was the same. The D7200 is the better camera with things like an internal focusing motor which the D5500 lacks. On the other hand, the D5500 is lighter and more compact making it a lot easier to carry and use (for me, anyway). The D5500 also has the fold-out touch screen which is a really nice feature...something the D7200 lacks. If you want the more professional camera of the two, go with the D7200. If you're a good "enthusiast" looking for a comfortable camera offering the same picture quality at a lower cost, go with the D5500.

Do a Google search first on "Nikon D7200 vs D7100"
I decided that the only difference TO ME was the increased buffer size.
I found a NEW D7100 for less than $600.
I think the 7200 refurb is the best upgrade from a 3300, and yes I would prefer the 3300 (which I have and love) over the 3400 which lacks a sensor cleaner. With the 7200 you get pro quality features at an enthusiast price. I would also recommend the 7200 over the 7100 for IQ reasons. The 5500/5600 is not a big enough jump from the 3300 to get me excited, except if you are taking lots of family videos with the articulated screen. The 3xxx/5xxx have pentamirrors to save cost and weight but you only get 95% viewfinder - with the 7xxx you get a pentaprism with 100% viewfinder, besides the other benefits.

I would ask myself - why do I want to upgrade? Image quality is the same, weight is the same. d3300 was announced in 2014, d5500 in 2015-technology is the same.
The only reason for the upgrade I see is screen, d5500 has flip touchscreen display. Better autofocus (39 focus points vs 11). If you need it go for it, otherwise enjoy your d3300 or move to D7xxx.

To me, feature that I use often are more important than features that I may need on rare occasions. The D5500 has an articulated touch screen and the same sensor as the D7200. The D5500 is lighter and has most of the features that I use regularly. Yes, I can't use legacy Nikon lenses with it ( I don't own any) and I can't trigger external flashes with it and I can't use high speed flash with it. These features are not what I need on the regular basis. I would opt for the D5500.
Any way you look at it, the D5500 is a better camera than the D3300 and even slightly smaller.
Thank you so much for your advises. I really appreciate the interaction of the group and am glad I joined.
The lack of an articulating LCD screen on the D7200 is a game killer for me. At 74 years old, the idea of laying on the ground to get a low angle shot is unappealing to me. The articulating screen makes low angle photography possible for me.
