I am going on vacation and I am looking for a underwater camera. Does anybody have any experience and knows which is good? I was looking at the Olympus TG-4 and I thought this one was pretty good but I am open to any other model. I liked this one specifically because one is able to shoot in RAW.
My wife has a Nikon AW120. She likes the feel of it, just for snapshots, nothing under water. No RAW but takes good quality pics.
I dive but always see people with enclosures for their cameras. Although that camera is rated to 50 feet that is almost two bars of pressure. If you just want to play in the pool that is probably a good choice. But if you want to dive I would find an enclosure that would be easier to maintain the gaskets and put silicon grease on them regularly. The canon G16 has a after market waterproof enclosure.
Have you thought about a sealife dc2000, the image quality is nice. It shoots in raw, 20 megapixels, and goes to 200ft in depth for diving.
I'm debating on getting this vs a camera with housing, for scuba diving.
I think I put together the best "deal" for under water...
I bought a used (like new, basically unused) Nikon 1 J1 (a decent little camera) kit with 2 lenses off Craigslist for under $150. I looked for this set up specifically because B&H has the...
Nikon WP-N1 Waterproof Housing for Nikon 1 J1 / J2 Digital Camera
on clearance for FIFTY BUCKS!!!
(with free shipping)
I think it was $800 originally!
A complete and total bargasm, lol.
It looks pretty cool too, you may end up the envy of the dive boat.

Tg-4 is a great little camera.
I use a GoPro for my underwater shots now and am perfectly happy with the results! The 4 Silver or the 5 is what I have and use. Ive had several other underwater cameras and housings over the years but dont shoot UW enough to justify the cost so a GoPro it is!!

I have a Nikon AW100, which replaced a Pentax WP60. Both performed quite well when there is adequate light, both suffered badly as light diminished and the flash on either probably wasn't worth including. Sprog has an Olympus (which seems to be the front runner at the moment) though I've not seen any results from it. Panasonic seems to do well also.
Note. I lost my WP60 when kayaking of La Jolla. The strap broke and the camera sank. All I'm saying is get a strap that anchors at two points or a water buoy if using for water-based surface activities.
IT WAS THE STRAP THAT FAILED ON MY WP60 (WHERE THE CORD WAS MOULDED INTO THE WEBBING).
I lost a lot of memorable shots that day because I hadn't bothered to download for a while, the blackest day of a long holiday.

Got a refurbed Nikon AW130 coolpix for $145.00 and have never looked back. Enjoy.
All good recommendations. Real question is where you want to go with UW photography? If you are focused on snorkeling or just want to try it while diving go with the TG-4 or a GoPro. If more serious the Sea Life mentioned above or a Canon G series in an Ikelite or Fantasea housing that you can add a strobe to would be a great way to start

A thought: The color underwater is extremely blue. You can use a color-correction filter on the camera (my preference) or correct in post. >Alan
Hi - I'm a Mom that lives on the beach and loves water parks, I have had many underwater cameras, and I'm super hard on them. I have had: Canon D10, Canon D30, Nikon AW130, Sony TX30, Olympus TG870, and I just bought the Fuji XP.
And you know what - they were all pretty darn nice cameras. Here is my experience with them
Canon D series: Fantastic image quality, super tough, I love these, still have 2 of these.
Nikon AW130: Fantastic image quality, super tough - no problems here, great for the price
Sony TX30: This is the only one I had that broke and took on water. This camera does not seem very tough. I think its more for splash, not hard core underwater.
Olympus TG870: I bought this for the selfie screen and LOVED that feature. Great image quality, fun features, very tough. But my flash broke - and I like flash in the evenings.
Fuji XP- I've only used it once this season, and it was fun to use, but the image quality was very average. BUT it was only $100 - you get what you pay for.
I was super mad at my Olympus for the flash breaking and gave it some bad reviews in the past, but I must admit - I really liked that camera and may get another. The Olympus your looking at is the fancier model - I have heard it is super nice and the fastest of the underwater cameras.
I feel like you can't go wrong with the Canon D series, Nikon's AW series, or any of the Olympus Toughs - they are all super tough and take great underwater pictures.
