What have you experienced with this extender, does it soften your picture or is it still as crisp as without it. Is the extender worth the money to get better pictures.

Thanks

Dave

The 2X will slightly degrade the image but if you are shooting with ample light, it's not that big a deal. You will more than likely get better results with the 1.4 III teleconverter and cropping. The 2X is more suited to the f/2.8 lenses but it will still perform quite well on an f/4.
Both extenders cost the same and both are worth what you pay for them.

Here is a photo taken from about 150 ft. away.I shot this the day I received my 500f/4 ll.I attached a 2xlll converter to it to see what it was capable of.The setup was on a tripod and a remote release was used. The photo was cropped and sharpened in iPhoto.I was satisfied with the result and believe that with good technique and practice you can get good images with it.However it may be best to start out with a 1x4 as your keeper rate will be much higher.

The 500mm f/4 IS L is such a good lens that though the 2x ext can degrade the image some the results are excellent.

Just an example:

It depends on what lenses you put that TC, but it is never as good as without it, especially with the 2x. The 1.4x is better in that regard (I have both and it is hard to find a difference in the image with the 1.4x, or without it!

Dave - I own the 2x extender but rent the 500L when needed. My usage doesn't justify owning this magnificent lens. There's no tangible negative impact of the extender.

I'm on my phone so I can't link to examples in Flickr the same as on a computer. Here's a link to an air show shoot with 500 and 2x at 1000mm.

You will see a 25% loss of sharpness, the viewfinder will be dark, and AF acquisition and tracking will be less functional. The 500L is an outstanding lens, and will still deliver really good, but not outstanding results with the 2X. I am a Nikon shooter, and I often go with a friend that uses the 1.4X on his 5DmkIii. He often compares what he gets to what I get with my 600 F4 and he is pleased, even after cropping. He does not own a 2X, however.

What body are you using. If you haven't already considered it, an f/4 lens with a 2x Extender will leave you with a maximum aperture of f/8. I assume you have at least a relatively recent body which will AF a lens with a maximum aperture of f/8, but if you have an older body like a Canon 5D Mark II, it won't.

IMO, if you are on a lower MP full frame sensor then the 2X makes sense. ( loss of light/ISO has less impact) If you are on a high MP crop frame sensor, then no, makes less sense ( loss of light/ISO has a higher impact on IQ)

You also have to judge the 2X aperture change as it affects AF ..........is the work that you do AF speed sensitive ??

There is not a 2X extender made that does not degrade your shot in some way. That said, the combo you describe should hold up. But personally I would never use a 2X extender.

Actually the Canon 2XIII converters with the new L lenses are designed to work together. Not the image loss you see with other brands.
Usually image loss with them is atmospheric than optical.

I have the Canon 1.4 extender to use with my 100-400 zoom. On a tripod with well lit stationary subjects the extender has pretty much no impact on sharpness. I rarely use it though because the quality of my photographs suffer. Its not because of sharpness, its because losing the aperture range prevents me from using higher shutter speeds and lower ISO values.
