Hi - I have been reading and comparing DSLRs until I am cross eyed. Not a beginner with camera usage but certainly no expert. I love to shoot sporting events, of course, friends and interesting people, architecture when traveling on vacation. I don't shoot many videos but would like the ease of transferring pictures from camera to online. Right now, quick autofocus is what I need. Been long time since I worked with aperture settings but will work into it.. I like shooting close ups so would like to get a 70-300mm lens with camera - unless there are other suggestions for lens choice.

Money... my Nikon D3300 was stolen. Spending limit is $600 but of course, would like to find a bargain. Would spend little more if camera is really worth buying for its features.

Please, please help.. too much for my brain to absorb and decide. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.. thank you!!

Christine

Take a good look at a refurb. D7100. It falls real close to your price range, and is a huge step up. One of Nikons best!

I would suggest buying another D3300, refurbished or new. I am not impressed with the D3400. Your best bet, would be a D5300, refurbished if you can find one. It has a swingout LCD screen which can be accommodating at times. Check Nikon USA and B&H Photo for refurbished DSLR cameras. For $600, you can get a brand new D3300 with an 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses. Good luck.

I have a 7100, it is an excellent camera. I would go with a refurbished one as long as it is FACTORY REFURBISHED. I have bought several cameras, all factory refurbished and haven't had a single problem with any of them. The 7100 is so much more camera than either of the others I was surprised at the big difference.

I moved up from the D3200 to the D5300 and am very pleased with it. Unless you are someone who thinks "bigger" is better, the D5300 is an excellent choice.

i am with everybody can't go wrong with D7100 but the question is between D3400 and D5300, i will go for the D5300, you said you're not a beginner then it's time to move up a notch.

Hey, I forgot to tell you WELCOME TO THE FORUM! Everyone else missed that to. So just sit back, take your shoes off, pour yourself another cup of coffee and enjoy yourself, you are among friends. This is a good place to find information and ask questions. The first thing I would do is go to the top of this page and in the blue print find 'search' click on it. It works like Google (almost) everything that has been posted on this forum about whatever you put in the box will be brought up. I've found that is a great source before I ask a question.

Again welcome

Thank you for your responses and the "welcome".

I checked the forum and could not find answer so put up my post. Read other great posts in subjects but can't do anything without replacing my camera. Since I have had a Nikon from old, want to stay with that family. Consensus seems to refurbed D7100... will see what I can find. Thank you again for all then great information. 😊🍷

Nikon eliminated the ultrasonic sensor cleaning function in the D3400. All of Nikon's recent DSLR cameras have had that feature. Also, its pop-up flash has only one half the power of the flash in the D3300. If you get the D3400 you might want to get a filtered blower for when the sensor gets dust on it. I got the Koh Global Hepa Jet Air II blower. It has a large hepa filter that filters out 99.97% of dust particles, an anti-static filter, and a one-way check valve.

I see that you want to get a 70-300mm lens. I have the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR AF-S lens. Nikon did a remarkable job with that lens. You can't beat it for the money.

You mentioned transferring pictures from camera to online.
D5300 uses WMU, built in.
D7100 uses WMU, with an added adapter
D3400 uses snapbridge, built-in.

For travel and ease of use, I chose the D5300, it also has GPS built-in.

The D7100 has more buttons for direct control, bigger and heavier, though.

No one can decide for you what camera and lens to purchase. The photographer takes the picture, not the camera. Too many think changing cameras will solve all their problems and get better pictures. Not many will use a prime lens and learn their camera but are determined to have a long zoom lens and play zoom. Many end up being just pictures takers.

If you are shooting sports I suggest the D500. 10fps is great and with a 70-200 you are off and running.
