Hello everyone,

I'm looking to buy the Canon 100-400 IS II lens. It sells for roughly $1,999.
I live in NYS and am trying to find an out of state dealer to save myself the $160 tax.
I don't want to buy the gray market version however.

Thanks for your input.

Go to Amazon. There are plenty out of state options.

Try canonpricewatch.com. They have a street price feature that usually would satisfy your needs unless their source is in NY. Another source might be competitivecamera.com in the Dallas, TX area.

You might try Pictureline. They're in SLC. I purchased my 1D MIV from them.

Canon refurbished is my preferred way to buy. As one of their techs explained to me. For them to call it refurbished, every function of the item has to be checked by the tech. In comparison, not every new camera of the production line has every function checked. Besides, the warranty on factory refurbished is great and the price is not bad either.
Sometimes hard to find though.

If you buy online from Canon or Nikon, refurbished or new, I think you still have to pay taxes and shipping costs. But, you're buying with confidence though.

Please let me ask, why would you choose to allow your streets, bridges and highways to fall apart and let your children go to overcrowded classrooms with inadequate supplies and security because YOU did not meet the obligation to pay sales tax on out of state purchases?

That said, Oregon has no sales tax. Come for a visit and you might stay. I did 20 years ago. :)

O. J., I appreciate your sarcasm. As a Native New Yorker and California migrant and eventually a Nevada refugee, as you ery well know, neither a NY nor California resident who is buying high end photo equipment is in any danger of being under taxed or of failing to paying their enforced unfair share of State expenses.

But if guilt is good, GAS is better.

There's one County in the State of Louisiana that pays 10% Sales Tax. Unbelievable. You think he would not want a Sales Tax break?

I recently read that starting this month Amazon was going to start charging taxes on all sales.

Try Bergen County Camera. Check out their web site. I live in Orangeburg in Rockland County. They are just across the border in NJ. They are a "real" camera store.Been in business for 35 years. Competitive prices with B&H, Adorama, etc. I buy everything there. Bought my D7200 there and had them ship it to my house. Saved NYS tax. Everyone who works behind the counter is a camera pro. Don't know how far away you are, but it might be worth a trip.
