Good article, it makes sense to me. I am not a pro. The new Canon 5D Mark lV is over $3,000.00. That's a lot of money. I just bought a old, used, full frame 1Ds with a low shutter count for 220 dollars. I works great and the Image Quality is superb. I have my pictures printed at 8x10, so , do I really need 50 mega pixels? Sorry Canon, but the answer is no. How many amateurs, honestly, need a 6,300 ISO? I am thinking, not that many. I know I don't. It seems that just about everybody but me has a cell phone, with a camera. That hurts sales.
I am not against new technology, I have 4k TV's, a 4k disk player and a amp to process them all. I have a fast computer. We live in a time where technology seems to advance daily. But, there comes a time were enough is enough, and consumers are holding on to perfectly good gear.
Approaching market saturation?
Many people get a new phone every year or new model. My smart phone is four generations back from the current model. Works great for me, don't need a new one.
But I suppose people are not rushing out to buy a new camera model each time one comes out?
Let's face it,we are a dying breed. We love our cameras and live for that great shot but go to any event and there they are, holding up their blessed phones. We give a little sneer as we turn our Nikon to Raw but they are quite satisfied with their results ,the phone has recorded all they want.
And they now can turn their phones to RAW.
Interesting article.
I agree - I think that the consumer-level DSLR photographer is a dying breed. When I haul out mine (currently a Pentax K-70) I always get comments about how big and heavy it is compared to their point&shoot or cell phone. On the other hand, when we get around to showing photos they all wonder why my photos are sharper, clearer, better colors, etc.

If you can afford it, why should "enough be enough"? I don't need a Ferrari but I damn sure would own one if I could afford it. Let's face it, unless you are a professional, most of us could do nicely with a $500 camera. But toys are toys so I am all in favor of buying what makes you happy. I currently have a Canon 6D which does everything I need right now but I am getting ready to buy the 5D IV because I can. If you are happy with your older 1D then enjoy.
it is like shooting clay pigeons , a $ 120 new 12 gauge single shot , compared with a $ 10.000 one , if you cant shoot straight , it does not matter .
