I have a rebel t3 with a 55 to 250 lenses it has auto focus. I want to get a 500 Len but can't afford one. Can someone let me know if a converter is a option to take it to 500. Would appreciate any advise.

Converters are an inexpensive way to increase focal length but generally three things can (not necessarily will)
happen: 1) focus becomes softer 2) f stop minimum is increased 3) auto focus may or may not work properly.
I know - I just got one (a Kenko 2x) without doing the proper research and have to live with the result. In order to use the Kenko I use manual focus even though auto focus seems to work with my Tamron 16-300 lens on a Nikon d5500.

Here is a link to B&H Photo who has been gracious enough to post a Canon compatability chart for Canon lens to extender compatability. Very simple to read and understand. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/FrameWork/charts/canon2xExtender.html

I don't know what your budget is, but I got nice results by using the Canon 300mm F4 (great lens!!) and a teleextender. I believe the lens goes for around $600 used on Ebay.

The Canon 55-250 isn't a lens you'd want to put a teleconverter on. It doesn't exactly have great optics and a teleconverter will just make it worse.

It's an option. But with that lens expect image degradation.

Your lens is not compatible with either of Canon's current extenders.

True, but a 2X teleconverter from another company like Kenko might "work". Note that work is in quotes. I would expect the results with that lens to be mediocre to poor. It also will not autofocus at any focal length on the OP's camera since the maximum aperture would range from f/8 on the wide end to f/11 on the long end and his t3 body has will only autofocus on lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/5.6 and wider.

Not to mention loss of AF which the OP may not realize.

Yep, you're right. Add it all up and the idea spells disaster.

You will not get the best results. Take pictures of something close up. Why does everyone want to take pictures of subjects as far a want as possible?

image quality is something to consider. unless you are doing action shots, loss of auto focus may not be that big of a deal.
