Installed a third-party battery brip on my A6000. Worked fine, but I had to remove the grip to remove the memory card. Sometime between then and the re-installation of the grip something happened and the A6000 refused to power on., I now have a moderately expensive brick. No power with or without the battery grip installed; all batteries charged and working in other cameras. Tried the manual camera reset: no go. Any ideas. I'm of the opinion that I severely damaged the connection pins in the camera.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Makes me want to unload my A6000 with its collection of lenses while it still is working perfectly

Why do you assume its a fault with the camera as opposed to the 3rd party grip which may have shorted and damaged the camera?

I suspect the culprit lies elsewhere.

I have big hands and bought 3rd party battery grip for my old EOS SLI. Seemed to me that the AF ran slower and less reliably with it installed so I removed it and left it a drawer. I've been leary of such since. It seemed that the grip had to communicate with the on-board computer instead of just replacing the battery.

Since then I just build a custom extension to the camera base to add a resting place for my overlapping fingers. Needs to be removed to access battery door though, nothing
is perfect.

I have an A6000 and over a year ago bought an external grip....but only used it once since it totally defeated the elegance of that camera's small foot mark...I stupidly made it BIGGER...So now you write this story of doom....holy smokes....I won't be using it ever again thanks to your report here though I wasn't intending on using it ever again...

Yeah ..could be the pins...or could be it fried the circuitry??.....Sending it to Sony and telling them the truth might not be a good idea....Those guys have probably seen something like this before...

Did you try contacting the outfit that sold the grip or googled this to see if you got any matches from other people with the same experience with that grip?

The battery compartment on the A6000 does not look delicate re the pins...I carry around those small FW50 batteries and find them really great....use it on my A37, A3000, NEX 6, and other NEX cameras as well as the A6000....It is a solid performing battery....OEM or 3rd party...never had a problem with them...

Did you try attaching the external power like to charge the battery internally or if there is a way to power the A6000 with an external source?...never tried that and don't think there is an option..but maybe? Also using a SONY OEM battery vs a 3rd party one might let the Sony battery "talk" better to the camera and reset it?

Heck it just could be something with the on/off switch failing that was coincidental with the grip installation??

So maybe some camera tech can troubleshoot this and it might be a simple problem to solve??

This company in Culver City, CA is very good and will take on just about any challenge....they have a web site as well...good luck.

Oh, my God! Some one put the wrong kind of motor oil in their Cadillac and ruined the engine. I had better get rid of my Escalade now while it is still running! That make a lot of sense, doesn't it?

These are the things that happen when you buy third a party add on. You void all warranty and what you saved is all gone.

I've heard stories on this forum of some third party battery grips not fitting well for Nikon DSLR cameras.

If you do, let me know. I'm looking for one for a friend who photographs (and trains) dogs.

I have shot for many years, but have always stayed away from battery grips, unless built in, such as the Canon 1DsII. Why get a compact camera and then make it bigger and create the possibility of such problems?

This outfit has a pretty good reputation. Might give them a jingle.

I have tried looking for this info, but do cameras generally have internal fuses to protect the circuitry? When you hook a camera via an USb cable to a cube how can you be sure the cube circuitry has not failed and delivers a full 110 volts to your camera. And you should you be holding it.
