My Trinity is:

f4 12-24mm
f3.5 18-300mm
When I'm traveling I leave the 12-24 at home because the other 2 cover most everything I need.

I'm considering the 12-24mm but I just don't see the need for such a lens when I have several that already go down to 18mm. Of course, I'm sure the 12-24 does a much better job of rendering the wide-angle shots that a super-zoom lens, but I just don't do much of those as my predilection is more towards telephoto work. Maybe the 200-500 would be something to look at.

I have that as well Dave, great lens for close-ups as well if you haven't tried it...normal shots everything from near to infinity is in focus...

There is only one Nikon Holy Trinity--there can be no substitutions.
Personal favorites; DX or FX, or third party, are something else.

I have the holy trinity and I like these lenses as well. Nikon 24-120, 105G, 16-35 and 200-500. I have a 35 and 50 and seldom use them. I like the D500 a lot but my go to is the D810.

Sometimes it's a tough choice on which one to use, usually it comes down to subject matter. I use the D500 much more.

most of my shooting is with dx cameras. most of my lenses are fx. I have a fx 8mm fisheye and a dx 18-80mm to cover my wide angle shooting. some of my lenses are G quality.

We have mostly fx with the kit lenses and Tokina 12-24 being the exceptions. My wife insists on using her 18-140 that came with the D7100.

Last year I saw a You Tube video narrated by Matt Granger, discussing Nikon's Holy Trinity of Lenses. They were the Nikon 14-24mm, the 24-70mm, and the 70-200mm f2.8. All three of these lenses are very expensive, and are best suited for full frame camera bodies. So, for all you Nikon DX owners, what would be your personal Holy Trinity of Lenses? It can be third party selections, FX or DX lenses. Select three only please. A mixture of zoom or primes lenses. are OK.

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR Lens on the DX becomes a 24-120 and is very versatile. To cannot get the 14-24 in a DX cause it is just two wide, closest you could do would be the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens, the 70-200 would also be hard to replicate in a DX. If it were me I would just get a copy of an out of date Nikon 70-200. Then your 16-80 would get you 24-120 and your 70-200 would cover 105-300 on the DX and your 10-24 would be a 14-36 on the DX, so you would have a 14-36, 24-120, and a 105-300. Holy Trinity Batman.

I do like smaller primes and have the Sigma Art 35 1.4,50,85 and 105 Nikons. A Zeiss 15 or 18mm might be a treat!

I have the 24-70mm, which I use on a D800. I was seriously considering the other two lenses last year, but concluded that they are unnecessary. The 14-24mm is a terrific super-wide lens, but it cannot take a CP filter, which is necessary for landscapes, nor a lens hood that actually prevents flare. For a super-wide, I use the 10-24mm DX lens. On the D800, it uses almost 18Mp, so the pictures do not noticeably degrade for most purposes.

The 70-200mm seemed like a good investment at first, but then I ran some tests and discovered that with a 36Mp camera, I can crop my pictures in Photoshop to the equivalent of +400mm or better without noticeable loss of quality for the 8 X 10's and even larger prints. So the net result is that my Holy Trinity of Lenses is, in fact, a Holy Pair.

I also have several other Nikon lenses in the rollaway. The 24-70 is used 95% of the time, the 10-24 3% and everything else about 2% of the time.

Nikon's 17-55 f2.8 DX lens was designed back when Nikon didn't have any full frame cameras. It's built every bit as well as any of the "Trinity" lenses. I have 2 of them at work. Expensive, heavy.
Another lens I really like was Sigma's first version of the 50-150 2.8. Fairly compact, fast and very sharp. Build quality right up there with the 17-55. Still use it on the Fuji S5pro for studio portraits.

There is not a Nikon Trinity for DX. The lenses you mentioned are professional lenses and pros have full frame cameras. They can also have DX cameras but since Nikon knows the pros always have a full frame camera and they can use those FX lenses on the DX cameras, they do not make pro lenses in DX. Want a professional lens, you have to buy the FX ones. You get what you pay for, as the old saying goes. Good glass costs money, just the way it is.

Exactly correct. I have both an FX camera and 2 DX cameras. I have a 10-24mm Tamron DX zoom (ok lens but not as good as the Nikon, however it was a gift and the Nikon was several hundred more), an 18-70 zoom DX lens and a 70-300mm DX lens. All are generously considered kit lenses and, while they work well do NOT provide the sharpness of the FX pro lenses. I have an FX 50mm Nikkor 1.4 lens that is astounding on the FX and I use it as a portrait lens on the DX. I also have an 80-400mm FX lens (also great sharpness and color but since it is the older version of the lens focusing is slower). I am slowly getting all my DX lenses replaced with FX versions.
