What kind of duck is this? A bit smaller than a mallard, it often submerges completely for about 15 seconds at a time. Pictures taken at the boating lake Helston, Cornwall

I believe that it is a moorhen, sometimes called a marsh hen.

You are correct. The Moorhen's (Common Gallinuel) frontal shield and bill is red with a yellow tip.

Thank you all for the identification. It sure is a long way from home, there were three of them there, must have been caught in the strong winds we have been having lately.

My book lists this as a Eurasian Coot. If this photo was taken in the UK, I doubt it's a North American species.

I did not even notice that the OP was from the UK. I do stand corrected. When I googled Eurasian Coot, that is exactly what this duck is. Good call!

Thanks folk, I was getting worried that it was far from home and that I was going to get swamped by twitchers (ultra keen rare bird watchers). It wasn't in my bird book at all

Thanks Gregory, now I've been told, I looked it up on Google and found a photo site with pics of Bald Eagles catching coots in flight, great photos!
