I need some help desperately. I just purchased and installed Lightroom 4. I have no previous experience with previous versions, but I had heard so many great remarks about Lightroom that I decided to check it out. Well, to make a very long story short, I have completely screwed it up. I fancied myself as being able to just wade right in and accomplish great things, but I have gotten to the point that I can't even find my own photographs, which number over 20,000 on my computer. I have two external hard drives and keep most of the photos there, but my ineptitude with the software has completely screwed the software up and now I don't seem to know where anything is located, nor how to access it.

With hat in hand plus a plate full of crow before me, I need help. I think I need to undo all that I have attempted and then start over with amends to Lightroom.

Please...... what should I do and where should I turn?
Dan

Yes, LR is different. First you have to import images into your Library. Then you have to Develop them. I recently got LR4, and I've been working my way through it. I was watching videos of Julianne Kost on the Adobe site, but they are gone now. Follow this link, and you will find good tutorials from Adobe. http://tv.adobe.com/evangelist/julieanne-kost/

You might uninstall and then reinstall it. Good luck, hope everthing works out for you.

Ok so first you need to be in the Library module. On the left is a pane that slides out, you can access your physical folders from there. I almost hate o ask, but have you put keywords on any of your images? That is the way I would start to organize your images in future, forget physical folders as they are far too limiting

No keywords yet. Watched a couple of beginner videos. Sloooooowly but surely, it is starting to make a little sense. Lightroom seems to use different logic with some of its organizational structure and command sequences.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. It all helps.

First, along the top right side you'll see Library Develop Map Book Slideshow etc., - click on Library

What you should see now is a panel on the left side of the screen with Navigator, Catalog, Folders, Collections, Publishing Services. You can click on the Folders to see a folder structure simular to Windows Explorer. If you don't see the panel on the left side and a panel on the right side then tap the Tab key to toggle them on and off.

Yes, Windows 7. The Tab key is key. Didn't know that. Makes all the difference. Light at the end of the Lightroom tunnel. It's beginning to make some sense, now.

Hi, Lightroom doesn't automatically import photo's into the programme. Even when you ask it to import direct from a card reader or camera it will ask you where to store them & also where to store backup files.
i.e. Click on 'Import' (left panel) Lightroom will then take you to Your Picture' folder, then choose a folder & click import on the right hand side at bottom of screen. you will then see thumb nails starting to show. At the end of that stage it will tell you how many files it has found in the folder you chose. You then look down the action menu on the right panel, tick 'do not import duplicate files' & follow the rest of the action. When your happy click the large 'import button & they will all be imported but they are still in your original folder, lightroom has only set up a link to those images.
If all this makes sence to you I can explain how to set import from camera/card reader..

You should probably get a good instruction book, I.e. Scott Kelby LR4 and follow the chapter on importing step by step. After you have mastered importing, then go on to the development modules. If you don't get importing down, you'll be in a mess the entire rest of your time spent in LR. if you have an extra bit for education, Matt K. On Kelby Training video is just excellent.
Good luck, I have been using LR since day one, and just luv LR4.

George Jardine has an excellent set of video tutorials on Lightroom 4 which can be purchased at his website, www.mulita.com. Check it out. There are a couple of free samples available.

I have had LR for over a year and i am still trying to figure out how to handle my 36,000 photos. I am only marginally ahead of you in understanding it and I have taken one all-day learning session on it and I have Kelby's book. if i had know that LR was not the least bit-user friendly i would have stayed with Photoshop which is much more intuitive. Another issue that i would be interested in others comments on is whether I am now stuck with LR forever since all of the changes I have made in images are in the LR programe files rather than in the images themselves. How would i ever get those changes mover to another, new program if i abandoned LR?
