I'm taking a course on iPhone 7plus photigraphy just in case I ever decide to go to those countries in the ME where the ban is being enforced. And just in case it gets extended to other countries. The 2 lenses in the 7 plus are pretty impressive for a smart phone.

No way would I trust an airline or cruse company with checked equipment. Carry on baggage and ware a a photographic jacket with gear in it is considered clothing and not baggage.

No. I had an electric razor in a small leather case, which could be mistaken for a small P&S camera,
missing from my checked baggage when I got home.

I don't trust the airlines with anything of value and I work for an airline. With that said I am standing at the boarding gate when an issue came up about carry on. It seems that a passenger had more then two items to carry on and they were not going to let her board. Come to find out that this women was a photographer traveling with her camera equipment and she was not about to put them in the cargo pit. The CSRs and the flight attendants did find room in the cabin for her equipment. Not everyone will be accomadating. Evidently this was one of those exceptions to the two items per person carry on rule. However a word of caution ALWAYS CHECK WITH THE AIRLINE YOU ARE FLYING WHAT THE RULES ARE FOR FLYING WITH A LARGE AMOUNT OF PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT. If you have to check it Pelican cases with TSA approved locks are always a good choice. If you do have to check photographic equipment, keep a list of the equipment you are checking with descriptions and model/serial numbers. A copy with you and a copy in one of the cases. This is your proof of what you checked if it is damaged or comes up missing and you have to make a report to the police and airlines. Keep in mind that the airline will fight you on any claims that you submit that they damaged or caused your property to come up missing.
I don't trust the airlines with anything of value ... (show quote)

Good idea. I actually did that for an overseas flight. I packed light, camera-wise, and was able to carry-on my equipment. It's always best to know the rules ahead of time. I did a lot of research before my trip.

Someday, I'd like to go on a photographic trip and take the DSLR & good lenses. I have a backpack or a Pelican case to choose from if that trip ever comes to fruition! Pelican case if I'm forced to check it...backpack if I can get everything in it I "need"; then carry on board!

Obviously you will have options - the key is to get information ahead of time. If you have no options, consider either shipping your camera gear home via FedEx, or fly to Germany or Amsterdam, spend a night, and fly home from there. If nothing else, make sure you have damned good insurance, and document you gear being in your luggage - with cell phone photos, etc.

Insure your equipment and quit worrying. There is nothing you can do about it.

I always carry my equipment in a backpack and store above or under my seat. I do put my laptop and monopod in a suitcase and store in baggage area. I've never had a problem,
but I do not fly frequently.

Hi, I know that not all flights require checking your camera gear as luggage. But with flights now coming in to the USA from some Afircan/ ME countries - which I go to for shoots, I worry about my gear. I also worry that this is going to expand with all the crazy things happening in the world? What do you think?

No chance. Fedex it with insurance if you must. I used to own a wonderful Olympus OM-10. Someone surrounding a TWA Brussels to NY flight now owns it, or pawned it.

While on a long road trip, I sent back some items to my home via UPS. I can recommend this technique for lightening a load when out there. You may wish to review shipping services and rates before departing.

I flew for the airlines. I saw first hand what the airlines are capable of doing. A story on the news last night reported an airline in this country sent 2 passengers to a city in New York when these 2 senior citizens were ticketed for Grand Rapids, MI. Allegiant Airlines was unable to get passengers where they were supposed to go so you have to think the same airline would be incapable to get anything where they said it would be going. When I go on vacation I am serious about my transportation and that does not include airlines. I have never lost any of my own luggage.

Remember that in this case the ban on carry-on electronics only applies to direct flights to the US from a number of airports. Another solution is to book your flights so that you come to the US from somewhere else. Not as convenient as a direct flight, but it is an option. Oh, and don't book a direct flight to the UK from one of those airports, either. The British have made a similar ban.

That said, no, I don't check high value items, either. I've had stuff stolen from checked bags, too. And a couple of years ago my suitcase never made it to us in Europe. It was a 2 week trip and I had no clean clothes or toiletries, other than what LH gave us or we bought. Seems UA never loaded the suitcase on the originating flight out of SEA. I got it back after we got home. Did make unpacking easy, everything was clean and folded. :-)

Never trust checked baggage....have lost many things...(not lost but stolen ) because my bags showed up with items missing..... I tired to avoid checking anything.....

too bad the airlines reps won't read these answers.... they should know (maybe they do) how people feel about checking luggage...
