Hi Hogs,

I don't know if anyone will remember me, it's been a long, long time since I've been on and I'd like to say hello and reacquaint myself with everyone. But, first I have a photography question, of course! Has anyone heard about the rumors regarding Canon's 6DII and if so is it supposed to be any improvement over the 6D? I'm getting ready to go from the 70D to the 6D and then I keep seeing that Canon will be releasing the II in the late spring early summer. I just don't know if it will be worth the wait. Any input anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. And I'm glad I found you all again. Laura

In the early 1900s, a bishop gave a speech in which he marveled at the modern technology, saying that he didn't foresee any major new inventions coming along. Just a few years later, Bishop Wright's sons invented the airplane.

Hi Laura,

It's all just rumors at this point... and those are often hard to distinguish from wishful thinking.

There was a recent rumor about an April 21 release date for 6DII, but that's been shot down (more probably a cinema variant of the 5DIV will be announced then... just in advance of http://www.nabshow.com/... Canon has only ever announced cinema cameras around this show). More realistic rumors say a 6DII is very likely this year, but only offer a wide range of possible announcement between April and Sept.

"Specs" for the 6DII can be no-brainers... or rumors... or pie-in-the sky wishful thinking.

Some suggested the 6DII might be a mirrorless model... But frankly I think that highly unlikely. Canon would need to design and produce a whole new line of full frame mirrorless lenses to support such a camera... and they've only been developing EF-M lenses (APS-C crop-only) at a snail's pace. So, I sure wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

Many think 6DII will have:

24MP full frame sensor (up from 20MP, but less than the 30MP of 5DIV).
Digic 7 processor (no-brainer).
5 to 6 frame per second continuous shooting rate (up from 4.5 fps).
45-point AF system, all cross type (up from 11-point with only one cross type at center).
Dual Pixel Auto Focus (in Live View mode)... pretty much a certainty, most newer Canon models have it.
Maybe a 100% coverage viewfinder (I'm skeptical... this adds cost, size and weight.. current camera's is 97%)
Articulated touch screen LCD (first FF Canon model to get a swivel screen?)
Built-in Wifi and GPS (no-brainer).
Probably no change in shutter specs (1/4000 top speed, 1/180 flash sync).
HD movie improvements likely... 4K?
Dual SD memory card slots? (I'm skeptical).

The autofocus system upgrade seem likely and, IMO, will be the biggest improvement over the original 6D, which uses a fairly primitive 11-point AF system. 45-point seems very likely, similar to what's in 80D, T7i/800D and 77D. I would expect 6DII to be able to focus down to -3EV (as the original can, altho center point only... 80D, 7DII, 5DIV and 1DX-series all are now able to focus down to -3EV, which is approx. "moonlight").

I do not know if 6DII will be "f/8 capable", the way the 80D is at 27 of it's 45 AF points (and in part 7DII, 5DIII/IV and 1DX-series also are). This allows using f5.6 lenses with 1.4X teleconverters or f/4 lenses with 2X. As best I can tell, the two new models (T7i/800D and 77D) recently announced but not yet in stores do not have "f/8" capable autofocus. They also do not appear to have 100% viewfinders (which is part of what makes me skeptical of this on 6DII). I assume 6DII will have Micro Focus Adjustment feature... but it's not guaranteed. I think Canon left it off the T7i/800D, and am not sure if the 77D has it. (80D does.... But T6i/750D and T6s/760D models do not.)

Price is likely to be around $2000... as was previous model when it was first introduced. To meet this price point, Canon may need to cheapen some of the specs mentioned.

I think it most likely 6DII would be bundled in kit with the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens (sold separately for $600). This is the way Canon bundles the current 6D, instead of with the new 24-105mm f/4L IS USM II ($1100) they're offering in kit with 5DIV.

Thank you for responding to my post. I actually didn't think of it that way and you do make a lot of sense. The price will most likely be at least a third more and how much more could they add. I had the articulating screen with my 70D and rarely used it. You absolutely gave me something to think about. Thanks again. Laura

Thanks...I've been there but the latest rumors are wish-washy at most. The latest states April 21st, but not to hold our breaths.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Hi Jerryc41,
We've met here a few years ago. You're up by reservoir if I remember correctly. Anyway, I'm totally confused at this point. I've been lucky enough to come into some money and I thought I'd pass my 70D on to my mom and purchased a full frame. I was even looking at Leica's last night on BH site, new and used. I know I could use Sony lenses with a Leica and that would be my ultimate 50th gift to myself. Am I crazy or not??? Help!

Thanks,
Laura

Thanks...I read that also, plus some others, but I just can't see or tell through the authors if it's going to be worth the wait. Some report Canon snoozed on this chance and others say it will definitely be worth waiting for. I guess as with everything it's a gamble and I should probably wait.
Thanks again.

amfoto1,
Thank you so much for the detailed description of what to expect from the 6DII. You really provided me with enough information so that I can compare the two models and decide from there. I just wish I knew when it will be released, I'm like a kid with money burning in my pocket. But, I want to make the right decision so I think I'll wait and see what Canon offers. I definitely want the 24-105mmf/4L IS USM II lens, I know they offer that with the 6D.

Now I'll through you a screw ball. I was looking at Leicas for fun last night and found some used on B&H that caught my eye. From what I understand they use Sony lenses with a mount (and I'm sorry if that's not the correct word, I drew a blank). Although, I would love to have all Leica glass I would initially purchase two Leica lenses, a 50mm f/2.5 or 2 and 90mm f/2.5 and/or 180mm f/4. That's my dream camera and I have the opportunity to purchase one, plus this is going to be my 50th b-day present to myself. Am I nuts to go to a Leica or should I stay with a Canon? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks again for such a detailed explanation on the 6DII.
Laura

Will have to wait to hear from Canon but I thought I saw the upgrade from the 6D would be to a new mirrorless in the M series.

Thanks for your input...I also heard that rumor, but unfortunately I believe that's only a rumor. From what I understand from another person who wrote a very detailed post on this thread about what to expect on the new 6DII (you should definitely check it out) mirrorless would have cost too much because they would have had to refigured the entire camera.

Again, thanks for responding,
Laura

So what you are saying is, you have issues with progress, with moving forward. Companies like Canon put a lot of time, effort and money into developing new technologies and refining and improving existing ones. They do this to make money. Why else do you think they are in business. What do you consider 'regular updates'? The EOS 6D was introduced 4 and a half years ago. May I ask, what features of the 6D rendered anything obsolete. My 5D IV is far more advanced than my 6D, yet I still get plenty of use out of my 6D. The 6D II will be a welcome upgrade to a really nice, yet limited, entry level full frame DSLR. If you don't need one and don't want one, then don't buy one.

rmorrison1116,
I'm sorry if I misled you in anyway, but I'm not against progress, I just understood what the previous poster had stated about change and how some companies make changes just to make money without really improving the product. My issue with upgrading is I want a new camera, I really don't need one, but I would rather learn more on a full frame then a crop censor, a 70D. And as of last night my focus has sort of shifted to the Leicas. I would love new and would buy new but there are some good deals at B&H on some used bodies and lenses. Or as you stated and others have move up to the 5DIV. I'm just not sure and I have some time to mull it over. I plan on driving to B&H near the end of April and by then I'll have made up my mind.
Thanks for your feedback, it's always appreciated.
