Saw this bird today near a fresh water pond. Is pretty but don't know what it is.

It looks like a Black Necked Stilt.

Don't have my bird book with me but it looks like a stilt to me. From looking at the bird, calling it a Black Neck Stilt is more that likely a correct identification. It has been a long, long time since I have seen a Black Neck Stilt, but I have no doubt that these two are properly identified.
Black Necked Stilt. I see them all the time.
Definitely a black-necked stilt. American avocets are overall lighter with a recurved bill and more orange feathers on the top half.
