In his tech column this week, David Pogue of the NY Times wrote: "I (have) the amazing Canon S100, a tiny pocket camera with the biggest sensor on the market . . . But in two weeks, I’ll be switching my allegiance. You cannot believe what’s about to come down the photographic pike. Trust me: If you’re in the market for a small camera with astonishing photographic results, hold off for a few weeks."

ANYONE have an idea as to what he's talking about??

Unless he is coming out with his own design, I have no idea. But David Pogue's message sure has me curious and therefore I'm waiting even if I wasn't in the market. Please keep us posted in case we miss it. Thanks!

There's a new sensor/processing technique created that lets a user take a photo, view it and change the focus at will on practically any point in the photo. Somehow the photo retains every bit of information about an image, including varying focus. I don't know if there has been any commercial product developed using this yet.

That's the Lytro camera. It is already released, and the focusing software only works on Mac at this time. Windows is supposedly coming but is already many months later than originally hoped.

The Lytro is a neat niche product, but I suspect David Pogue is talking about something else.

Thanks, I couldn't remember the name. The Apple WWDC conference is next week, I wonder if there's anything related to that.

To me the mystery is about his changing 'allegiances' . . . so, I'm guessing it's not a Canon product and therefore not the newly announced Rebel T4i. He might be referring to the new Sony RX100 just mentioned in Photography Bay. It's a new 20.2MP compact camera with a much larger sensor than other compact zoom cameras around. The 1-inch CMOS image sensor is the same size as the Nikon 1 Series interchangeable lens models. The fixed zoom lens provides 28-100mm equivalent zoom range with a max f/1.8 aperture. But a game changer? Could be.

game changer ?
I doubt it.
still small sensor and will be difficult to get bokeh.

Still waiting for a game changer in the 4/3 arena, like a camera with a large sensor that can fast A/F.

Sony still alittle slow.

Give me a 24 mp size sensor of the Sony 7 with the AF of a
new OLY. in a smallish body,
than I would be happy.

The question is, does he know what he's talking about? Maybe he's justy leading us on (probably not). I've seen him on TV and the web, and I've read lots of his writing, so he seems to be up on technology. That's a nasty thing to do, though. I have very limited patience, and "a few weeks" can be an eternity.

I suspected Sony because they're really pushing the technological envelope to get attention - and sales. But, "astonishing photographic results"? In today's market, that's a pretty big claim. If he knows about something so special, why haven't we heard rumors?

The RX100 is pricey. http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/story/2012-06-09/reviewed-advanced-compact-cameras/55464332/1

1/1.7" is hardly "the biggest sensor on the market". In fact, only one sensor size is smaller. Compare sensor sizes here:

If he's that far out of the loop, maybe he's talking about the D3200. :-D

It's a long shot but it might have something to do with Quantum Film:

That could be it, but cameras will be a while in coming, so I can save my money.
