Hi Everyone,

I have been shooting with a Nikon D7000 and using (but still learning) Darktable on a Mac mini (Late 2012) running on Sierra 10.12.3 to post process my pictures. I shoot mainly Florida birds and flowers, some landscapes. I can't use Aperture anymore, so Darktable it is for now. With practice, the results have been getting better and more satisfying as I get used to the software. This morning I was so excited when the UPS-Man delivered my new Nikon D500. I had spent several hours reviewing the user manual, then set up the camera, updated the firmware and went outside to take some test shots. To my great disappointment, Darktable would not read the NEF uncompressed files! I could see the previews, but the RAW files would not open after importing them. Huge BUMMER! I changed to compressed lossless 14 bit and Darktable will open those files, but all of the information is not there and I am disappointed that the uncompressed NEFs are a no-go at this point. Darktable would not read the white balance of the uncompressed 14 bit files and gets stuck (spinny thingy). Nikon Capture NX-D runs so slowly on the Mac mini, it is unusable.

Besides venting and feeling sorry for myself, do any of you kind folks use Darktable? Have you had such issues? Is so, how have you circumvented them? What would you recommend that I try next?

Thanks for "listening" and I look forward to reading your responses.

PS: The D500 is a dream to operate ....so smooth and fast.

Kind Regards,
Margie
Hi Everyone, br br I have been shooting with a Ni... (show quote)

Why can't you use Aperture. It will support your D500 and also run on OS Sierra.

Two words: Get Lightroom.

Everyone has a right to an opinion and mine is that years ago when I bought Lightroom and subsequently rejected it as far too frustrating, and often redundant if you just learn to use Photoshop, I've been a relatively happy man. Now, when I see the plethora of LR problems described in this forum, I just smile and move on knowing I and my blood pressure are better off...IMHO of course.

I just load my NEF files into bridge and use Adobes DNG converter to view the files. Then I process my images in Photoshop and On One software. You can now buy On One Camera Raw 2017 and will do it all for you.

I agree that everyone has a right to an opinion, and they get lots of them here. I have foisted my opinions on many people on the hog.

So for those of you who have had problems with LR, my condolances. You are right to find something else that works for you. My way is the true way for me, but YMMV.

And using Bridge and Photoshop is a viable alternative. That combination is used by a lot of photo groups because, for one thing, it can be used in a shared networked situation where LR is a single user tool. So it's right for some people. Being a single user myself, and having had prior experience dealing with databases, I like LR. It fits me.

My copy of Aperture works well on my iMac. Affinity works as does the NIKcollection.
