Pictures from my daughters team. I didn't really really appreciate how hard it is to get sharp pictures in a natatorium where flash is not permitted. Still working on right combo of settings...but getting there! Shot at f2.8, Iso 1600-2000 , SS 1/800.

Thanks for looking

Fran

Nice work Ben. What kind of equipment are you using?

I tried a few when a friend of mine was swimming with a HS team. I found it hard. There were always things in the way! Like the perfect shot of the girl with a chair behind her! You've done very well. I never could seem to get enough light, as most meets were in the evening.

It's Fran, I'm Bens grandma😀...nice to meet you. I have a Nikon D750 and lens is 70-200 mm f2.8. Glad you liked the pics

Lighting was the biggest problem. I think they would have been sharper with lower ISO. Swimming definitely easier as they were moving in one plane, as opposed to diving, where they were rotating and falling. I was lucky that they let me on the deck as we told them I was the "official" school photographer ( HA HA) if I wasn't on deck I shot from above

Thanks for looking

Sorry Fran. You have very nice equipment. Next time you might try raising the iso, and open your aperture to 2.8. What focus settings are you using? Again nice work.

I almost always shoot at f2.8. I tried to keep my ISO down but am going to try raising it. I usually shoot at 1/800 but thinking I'll raise use faster shutter speed to see if I can get more clarity. Next big meet is in April so we will see how the new settings go
Thanks

Forgot one of your questions. Shot at f2.8 mostly at 1/800 and ISO was at 2000

To anyone out there

What are your thoughts on monopod/tripod or using a gimbal to help with sharpness? I struggle mostly with the diving because they are moving in more than 1 plane... falling and rotating.

Thanks Penny. It's a pretty steep learning curve

Fran I would shoot faster than 800 to cut down on your motion blur. The monopod for swimming I wouldn't do. Your going to have trouble following the speed of the sport. My opinion only.

A few samples of higher iso around 5000 500 at 2.8.

Jules, those are very good, nice crisp edges. I'm going to try your settings at next meet. I also think some of my blur is user error.
I've been into photography for about 18 months and possibly not as steady as I should be, even with VR on. I'm sure that will get better with time.

Thanks for your input

Hi Fran:

Sometimes you don't need the vr on. The vr is searching for in focus spots. You may not need it. Try some with and some without.
Best of luck, you have a skill, just take a lot of pictures.
