I am looking for a quality lens that I can take backpacking with me. I was considering a 18-250mm for my Canon xs. Is this a good choice?

The 18-200mm is a classic all around lens that's sharp at all focal lengths.

The 18-200 auto focus isn't as fast as I'd like. For landscapes, it's fine. For sports, it's almost useless. I took mine back.
However, I have a 50-200 Sigma that has reasonably fast (not as fast as my L-lens) focus, and it's a good all-around lens.
Repeating, ...
If you're mainly doing nature and landscapes, the 18-200 is probably what you want.

Tamron makes a very good 18-250 zoom lens that should be suitable for most purposes. but that quality comes at a price... it's about a $900 lens. Sigma also makes one in this focal length that's a good deal cheaper, and offers stabilization which the Tamron doesn't have, and which could be very useful at longer zoom settings. both are f/3.5-6.3, so there's no advantage to either in that regard. i can't speak to the quality, since i haven't owned either one.

If I were you, I'd go to a camera store with a few of these in mind, and try them while at the store. Shoot out towards the parking lot / neighborhood. See how it feels. See the focus, etc. Figure out what is going to work for your needs.

Is there a lens with good range that will take action shots and is not going to break the bank?

I am thrilled using the Tamron 18-270mm PZ lens. Its predecessor was great too, but when I dropped it on concrete... Anyway the PZ is compact, lightweight, and shoots remarkably clear images. For a walkaround, it cannot be beat on the end of a Canon 7D, which is also lightweight and versatile.

If you want light weight, and you should, just take one. An ultra wide angle lens will do you best.

I've done a considerable amount of backpacking, and always regretted carrying the extra lens on those occasions when I forgot the agony of the long grundge to the top.

Backpacking is all about minimalizing isn't it?

I've also heard good things about the Tamron 18-270mm PZ. I own the Canon 18-200mm, which came as part my 60d kit. I've been happy with it but, as an earlier replier mentioned, I use it primarily for landscape. If you don't need the length, people also rave about the Canon 15-85mm. All are EF-S compatible. Have you tried www.borrowlenses.com? Rates seem reasonable. You can rent most for less than $50 a week. I've never personally used them but they are well recommended on various camera related sites and from some pretty credible professionals. Good luck.

I have the Tamron 18-250 and have been very pleased. My picture, "Frog on a flower" was shot from about 2' without a tripod. It was a serendipity moment in the vineyard.

I have a Tamron 70 - 300 auto and have been very happy with it. I do a lot of hiking, horse riding etc into back country. After having and using it for 5 years it seems to be getting squirally on certain zoom shots and I'm looking to dumping it. I have not dropped it and have taken very good care of my equipment. I use it on my Canon EOS digi rebel xti. Otherwise great for packing! Anyone know of a quality lense to 400 that won't break my bank account? The one I am lusting over is only 17K
