I've been noodling around with lighting crystal figurines and here are a couple of test shots for your amusement. I know the first one is a tad out of focus on the left side (not enough DOF on the macro for the first shot) but it's more the effect I'm looking at. The light sources are three Class III 5mW lasers.
Comment as you see fit :D

great creative out of the box thinking. prefer #1 cause its more vibrant.
Curious as to what the "Class III 5mW lasers" are. sounds like a military or highly classified item so if you have to kill me after you tell me please don't comment. I also like the top one best. Jerry

Lasers are classed from 1 to 4 generally depending on their output power. Class 1 is the kind found in CD and DVD players, Class 2 is your common or garden laser pointer, Class 3 are higher powered commonly used in the entertainment industry and Class 4s are industrial or military beasts. Class 3 5mW lasers are easily obtainedI got three in different colours off eBay from Hong Kong for £12. Note that some countries restrict general citizens from using anything bigger that a Class 2, notably Australia. In the US, it is legal to use any power laser for appropriate, non-commercial private use so you could get a 750mW S3 Krypton, although it is $1000.
The ones I got are pen-sized and powered from two AAA batteries and bright enough that the beam is visible in the dark. Remember that lasers should be handled properly. For the curious, the following article is a useful reference:

Thank you. So, you are not going to have to kill me?
