Save Lightroom Exported Jpegs - Best Practices?

Background: I post process on a MacBook Pro using Lightroom. I export Jpeg's to a Jpeg Folder on my Desktop and share via email. I also have used Lr Publishing Services to Facebook and/or Flickr. I find that if I share a Jpeg(s) once, more often than not I will share that photo several times again. I am aware of different opinions re: save/not to save Jpegs since one can always export again. My current Jpeg workflow to allow quick 're-sharing' of Jpegs without re-exporting from Lr is simply to configure Google Photos to auto backup the Jpeg Folder on my Desktop (which then backs up all my exported Jpegs at 2048 wide). Then weekly, I delete the Jpegs on the Desktop and avoid duplicate images on the Mac.

Questions:
1. how do most Lr Users handle exported Jpegs?
2. have any Mac Users integrated Apple Photos and Lightroom for managing Jpegs?

Thanks in advance for feedback, Bob

I only export JPEGs when I need them for a reason Post, Contest, e-mail, etc. Then I delete them after use since it is so easy to recreate a new one from my file image I see no point in keeping them. But I do keep some for use on my computer as background images in a slide show

When I create Jpeg files for Facebook or other uses, once they are posted or sent out, I delete the Jpeg file from my MacBook Drive. The original image is stored on an external Drive and backed up using Time Machine. I don't try to use Lightroom with Photos, as Lightroom is my 'go to' Organizer and post processing tool.

When I want to save JPEGs, I export them to the appropriate folder - Cars, Trains, Family, etc. Many people don't save JPEGs, but I do.

I have a LR folder called "LR export" for my exported files to include jpgs. About once a week I cull the unwanted children. As you noted, one can always export another if needed. Besides, I may export a single master to 2-3 export jpgs/tiff, depending on usage(web page, FB, personal printing). IMO it's a waste of time to save one more copy.

I am a LR user and I save .jpg images.

LR is my organizer, and the actual photos are stored on my HD in their own master folder. My primary format for saved edited images is .tiff so the edits can be accessed and changed if desired, and the image retains its "information".

For .jpg images, I have a separate sub-folder for them. It is organized similarly to the rest of the catalog so that particular images can be found easily. Although it is true the .jpg could be re-generated if needed, it is so much easier to generate it once and save it for future use. And, as you said, ones that are shared once will likely be shared again! I also keep a sub-folder for images that go to the photo lab for printing - the one I use will take .tiff at 8-bit level. Also, because prints larger than 11x14 will often be printed right to the edge of the paper, I make versions with a white border around them so there will be an edge of white on all sides!

FWIW - I only worry about JPG's when needed. Lightroom can export as many jpgs as needed in a few minutes, so why store them? When I complete editing on a raw, it gets exported as a JPG to my Flicker site, I only retain the original raw file and the edits to it (So Lightroom can produce another identical JPG if ever needed), or a round tripped TIFF/PSD file.

And if one uses LR virtual copy you can have one in color, another in B&W, another in Nik, another in Topaz, etc,. Saving all those jpgs, is just a waste of space.

Hi Bob,
I export jpegs from LR directly in an email using File>Email Photo and send them that way, no need to use the export process and they are simply there when needed. I can email one or more jpegs as desired. I use the Export process for other needs.

I have no need to manage jpegs so don't use any other process: all my photos are shot in RAW and then either emailed out or exported out as needed, any jpegs are immediately trashed after use.

I export and delete. I export to various destinations, and many have unique file type and size, image pixel size, and quality requirements, for which I have saved an export preset. It keeps things more organized than having multiple jpegs on my drive(s).

As far as a "best practice" it's what works best for me - it may not necessarily be optimum for you.

For emails, I export via Lightroom's email function without putting in addresses or text, which I add in my mail app. For others, I export to a folder on my desktop, then trash when the task is finished.

Like most opinions in UHH, there's lots of them as to what's waste of space or not. I choose to on occasion "waste" space. Exported LR jpgs, if I keep them, are in a sub folder of the original.

I have created an Export profile that creates 8x10, 150 PPI jogs and stores them in a Dedicated file. These are copied to Dropbox if to be shared with family and imported to Apple Photo for my wife's use. I then delete the Jpgs from the export folder. We use Apple Photo to create Albums for slide shows using the large screen TV and an Apple TV in the family room for family gatherings. We have one showing Christmas Photos from past years, that shows the kids and grandchildren maturing Forour family Christmas party.

I do as you do initially. I have an "exported" folder on my desktop that I put the images into until I'm finished with them. NOTE: this may be multiple folders inside the "Exported" folder as I may have a few projects going on at the same time. Once the images are sent and I am (theoretically) finished with them, I move them to an external hard drive (in a folder created for those images like "Stepp Wedding" or "John's Pass photos" etc. I keep those photos for a month or two until I'm sure I won't need them again. Then I delete them to make room for new exports.

I used to delete my exports. No longer do I do that. Too many times, I have been asked for a print and sometimes, purchase of a print. Retaining those jpg's makes it much easier to track down the original. I have 3 years now of exports. I do not include them in Lightroom. I export them to "Exports" by month.
