I am thinking of buying a Nikon D7200. Is this a good buy, or should I consider a Canon EOS. Or even a lower Nikon?

I love my d7200 and the ability to use older lenses that were made for film cameras on my newer Nikon digital cameras. To be honest you might as well flip a coin there are positives and negatives in both. Try them out at the store as suggested above and enjoy your search.

A Nikon D7200 is a very good choice, and presently is Nikon's second best DX camera next to the D500. Canon has some good choices too. The T6i, 80D, and the 7D Mark 2. You may check Canon USA and Nikon USA websites, to see if there are any refurbished cameras available. I saw earlier this year, a Nikon D7200 refurbished offered for $789 from B&H Photo. Good luck.

To paraphrase Smokey the Bear, "only you can decide which is best". However, once you decide, you are "married" to that camera. Lenses are not interchangeable. Accessories are not interchangeable. So, whichever you purchase, you'll be purchasing those additional items in the future made only for that camera. At this point, I'd compare prices of additional lenses you might want to purchase, strobes you might want to purchase, etc. Now, if how much stuff costs isn't really a consideration, go to a store and look at each camera carefully. Compare the specifications of each camera carefully. Then, you have to decide which of the two you really want. Remember. You are choosing a partner for life. Make it a good one.

Currently, I'm using a Nikon D90 and was reluctant to switch from film to digital because I had such an accumulation of 'film' lenses. On curiosity, I attached my Nikkor EF-I D 600mm f4 and was astonished that it worked, although a bit fidgety because the split view is key to lens focus.
The point I'm making is this; Canon sells systems, some require different lens mounts. Nikon has the f-mount although there are issues with some lenses working properly on newer models because of communication issues in the connection.
So, in conclusion, you need to see what you have, weigh the pros and cons of both companies, and they both have them, then make an informed decision. My choice was economic as I know both are image makers with benefits.

First you have to decide what you like to shoot. I shoot wildlife with a D7200 with FF lens from 18mm to 600mm FF. You Tube has many vidoes on landscape, portrait, close ups, wildlife ect with the gear they use. ONLY YOU can decide. Lens will be a high percentage of cost.

Nikon has the D7200 refurb on sale for I think $719.00. I bought mine for about this price and I love it. Check their website.

I have the Nikon D7200 and like it. I also have the Canon 80D and like it. I find the 80D a bit easier to use, but they are both great cameras.I also have the Nikon D500 and the Canon 7D II. Again, I find the Canon easier to use but usage of those bodies is mainly determined by subject and lens. The D500 gets used more than the older 7D II. The camera I use most often, for non specific, general photography is the Canon 5D IV. I do not currently own a Nikon full frame body. Either camera/manufacturer is a good choice but, the determining factor should be lenses. I upgrade camera bodies fairly often, every couple few years or so, but I still use lenses I've had for 20 years. My walkabout lens, and EF 28-300L is 12 years old. I have a nifty fifty f/1.8 that was made in 1988, still works like new. Let the lenses be a major factor in your decision.

I would follow Picturetaker's advice. Nikon and Canon have different ergonomics, so try a few in a store and see how they feel to you. Performance wise there is little difference. On some cameras you may find that to change frequently used settings you will have go several levels deep into a menu, which you will find extremely annoying! The question that many people seem to ask "Which is better, Nikon or Canon?" is meaningless. Then there's Pentax who have some pretty good gear too. Morrison1116's post was good too. The Nikon D500 is an amazing camera with astonishing image resolution and low light performance. And the thing with Nikon is that you can use some mighty fine legacy lenses if you don't mind manual focusing. Also the D7000 series are pretty amazing cameras. Sorry, but I'm not familiar with the Canon line.

I *love* my D7000. But I have very large hands and it took a while to adjust from the more comfortable body of the D300. It had one "flaw" that was fixed in the D7100 and the D7200. I use backbutton focus, and if I tried to use it with just one hand, I was frustrated by the location of the Live View switch. The D7100 and D7200 moved that down on the back, out of the way.

The D7100 and D7200 have more pixels, but... it wasn't worth the difference in price, since more than 16Mp is superfluous for what I do. I got my D7000 with 4K shutter actuations on eBay for $250. Awesome! I imagine you'll love the low-light capability and gorgeous colors from the D7200 just fine.

And Canon? Ford vs Chevy. If you aren't already partial to one brand over the other, or already have lenses for one brand, then both are far better than any of us who use them. Both have great product support and you can find what you need just about anywhere on the planet.

I'll second the notion: go pick them up, compare how they feel to your hand. Bring them up to your eye. Fiddle with them to see which suits you. Get the best buy you can on the one you like, saving your money for good lenses.

And to complicate your choice even more, look in to the mirrorless cameras withmicro 4/3 rd sensors. I love my Nikon D500 but DSLRs and their lenses are heavy and bulky. As one gets older or travels more, lighter is better. For that, think mirrorless.
Good luck and welcome to the UHH family: friendly, helpful, sometime dysfunctional-- but every day you'll learn something new.

If I could turn back the calendar and knew then what I now know, I would definitely go down the Canon road and not the Nikon road. But if I had lots of $$ to spend, I would settle with a digital Leica, like an M10. ~FiddleMaker
