Lots of things come in nice boxes. When should you keep them, and when should you toss them? Here's a guide.

My wife is constantly bugging me about all of the box's that I have kept over the years. They are all on a shelf nicely ordered and easy to find if I ever need one, which I will probably never use - but I have them. Every camera that I have ever bought in the last 20 years, every box for all of my ham radio equipment and other misc. items that I just might need (sure). I just keep them all - never know, just might need one some day.....!

Boxes for photo gear that I might sell are inside a large box upstairs in the garage. Many boxes are now beautifully designed and manufactured, and I save some of them for storage.

I save a lot of boxes and the wife is always after me to get rid of them. As soon as I do, she asks if I have a box that will fit this?

Are all senior photographers also amateur radio operators, or just you and I? 73 de Lee NV8YH

I recently sold my film camera and lenses with flash grip filters etc. I had original boxes for each one. The buyer didn't want any of the boxes, so out they went. My wife had a very extensive empty box collection, that took up a lot of space in the dumpster when we moved, along with 38 years of other junk that we never threw out.

I've never kept a box. My way of thinking is that if I buy something, its because I want it, so don't need a box to return it. The difference in resale with or without a box is so miniscule its not even an issue. Once an item has served my purpose, its paid for itself. If I then decide to sell it, that's just bonus money. I have enough worthless junk without keeping boxes.
