I agree with Rob about allowing the photographer to unleash his creativity regarding lighting. Lighting does not necessarily have to emulate the sun. If that were the case, there would be a lot less creative portraits out there. I think your photo is wonderful in every way and even though the lighting does not mimic the sun, it really does show off the talent in beautiful light. Thanks for posting.
You are quite right in " allowing the photographer to unleash his creativity regarding lighting" is a a good thing . . . but . . . since the OP says he is "Just trying out a studio setup with a new reflecting umbrella soft box and a reflector.", I would assume that he is posting to get feedback in ways that might improve what he is "trying". None of us will learn anything if all that happens is a handful of members just keep saying what a great job it is even if it is not technically correct. The so-called rules of photographic composition, lighting, etc. are meant to be broken, for the purpose of developing a "style", or to test one's creativity . . .but first one should understand the so-called rules before trying to break them. If the OP understood the so-called rules, and broke them on purpose, I would think that he might have asked what everyone thought of his "style" or creative approach to the use of his new lighting set-up.
Just my opinion of course . . .
