Thought I would send up some more pictures.
The first is a small 'jewel' beetle. Although pretty, it is the emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis). This is an introduced pest that came in from Asia in the 1990's, and it has been expanding its range.
The beetle shown in the next two pictures is a type of flower longhorn. I suggest it is Strophiona nitans based on its greatest resemblance to that species, but there are other very similar related species. I thought the 2nd picture was amusing since it looks like it is nonchalantly scratching a leg.
Next is a buckey butterfly (Junonia coenia). A few moments earlier, it was feeding on fresh dog poo with two other species of butterflies. I have pictures of that, but I wont subject you to those! Fortunately, this one wandered off so I could take a more acceptable picture.
Finally, a crab spider (Misumessus oblongus) with a muscid fly. I do see these spiders with a meal fairly often, and for some reason their meal is very frequently this species of fly. This was a challenging picture, due to wind conditions. At one point a carpenter ant came by and the spider immediately leaped away, dangling on a silk thread with its prey. After the ant passed, it quickly climbed back up.
I think these are very nice shots Mark, especially the Long Horns. What a big fly for that Crab spider!
Excellent series Mark. Interesting subjects and well done photography!
