This morning I tried to reinsert my SD card into my Panasonic GX8 but the mechanism that holds the card in is not working. It will slide into the space but the card will not seat in like usual. I removed the battery and tried again, I removed the lens and tried again. I tried a different SD card. I turned the card around but there is only one way the card fits in. Any other ideas?

So it doesn't lock into place. I always worry about that happening, and you've just proven that all my worrying was worth it!

Repair

--------------------------

"I don't have a permanent fix, but one thing that works is folding up a small piece of paper and holding it over the memory card while closing the cover so that the cover pushes on the paper which holds the memory card in place automatically when the cover is closed. You just have to experiment to get the folded paper the right size and thickness. Again, its not a fix, but it has worked for me."

"Viola! Fixed.

I removed the 8GB Sandisk Ultra II SD card from my Nikon D90 DSLR camera after an afternoons outdoor shooting, downloaded the photos to my PC and put the SD card back in the camera, which then displayed Err and e errors and the card wouldn't go all the way down in the SD slot of the camera, popped right up if pushed down. My first instinct was to freak out internally.

After a full day of silently agonising about which repair centre to take my D90 to, I noticed that the beveled corner of the SD card looked like it was crumbling or splintering apart like hard old plastic does when exposed to the sun. And a tiny sliver of plastic looked like it was missing off that edge (planned obsolescence?).

Back at the cameras' SD slot, I shone a really bright light into the SD slot and sure enough, behind the gold springs at the bottom of the card slot, was a tiny black sliver of plastic that moved slightly when I tipped the camera. About 3mm long. That tiny.

I removed the camera battery. Then I got a big long sewing needle, and with some very gentle manouvering, so as not to scratch anything inside the camera's SD slot, it fell out just when I was about to give up.

After I'd got the plastic sliver out, I trimmed the splintered edge of the SD card and put it back in, the camera gave a CHA error.

I tested my other SD cards. No camera errors and cards clipped in when pushed down.

So I cracked open the offending card so I could see what was inside it, then threw it in the refuse bin.

Camera and blood pressure back to normal. "

I had that problem with my Nikon. It turned out I tried to insert the card in the wrong orientation. Sound like the device that locks the card is not working. I would try inserting the card several times and it may release the mechanism for you

Thanks and I'll try the suggestions. I kind of wondered if there might be something very tiny inside the card compartment. I
turned the camera upside down and tapped it but nothing fell out. Next step is getting the light into the space. I have never had this happen before. Sigh. Good news is that warranty is still in effect for another month.

Unless they blame it on you.

I don't know where you got that idea from. I've had lots of Canon cameras to look after, not all mine, and I've never experienced or heard of this problem.

Normally you should hear a click from the latch mechanism do you hear it? it maybe a sliver of something has got in the works or perhaps the spring has gone on the latch. Being under warranty, I would spend around 15 minutes looking into it to see if it is something simple and if not use the warranty, it is what it is there for.

this might help

Yup that is what I will do. I do not hear or feel a click when the card is inserted. Thanks

Did you watch the video? With that one it was the card latch which had come out and gone behind the pins. Using his cel phone to film also gave a light to illuminate the slot.

Watched the video- hmm. I am going to Tucson this morning- there is a repair shop there that might be able to get a better look and have the right tools -

I would only have an authorized Panasonic repair shop look at it. joes repair could void your warranty. I would ship it off for warranty repair. My 2 cents

Where do you stand with your sd card issue?

Just got back from Tucson. I went to the only repair place in Tucson. The gal looked but she didn't see anything in the card slot that shouldn't be there and she thought it needed to have the spring assembly replaced. They were not an authorized Panasonic repair facility so brought the camera home with me. I plan to call Panasonic tomorrow as it still has a month warranty left.

Hope your "baby" gets fixed soon.
