My aunt and uncle lived on a private lake and always fed the birds off their deck. They had large sliding glass doors for the view of the lake from the house....every once in a while a bird would fly into the glass and knock itself out. One such day my aunt went onto the deck to render aid to a bird that had done exactly that. As she reached for the small bird laying on the deck, a hawk swooped down suddenly and snatched the unconscious bird from her grasp and retreated to have breakfast.

We have 8 feeders outside our sun room which has 15 windows, about a dozen birds a day fly into the windows, some do get knocked out or dazed. A couple have been killed which is sad. We also have dozens of squirrels that feed off the ground under the feeders, for whatever reason they will spook and run up a tree which scares the birds and that's when they hit windows.

I had one do almost that yesterday. I was going to the garage and a bird flew out of the bush with a dead quail in its talons. It was a small hawk/falcon unable to continue take off with the quail so dropped it in front of me.

It was too fast for me to identify the bird of prey. Maybe a kestrel or sharp shinned hawk. It wasn't larger than the quail.
