Close up photography using Canon 100-400mm L IS II

Testing close up pics @ 400mm. Maybe 2 feet away? I was on top of it at min distance.

F 5.6 wide open focusing on the 12 o'clock lum on the dial. I'm impressed as the hands are progressively out of focus, and the bezel is even more out of focus...all within millimeters of each other.

Cropped slightly for straightness.

Is that good? I'm assuming so, but not sure I'm not a macro photographer, but this lens sure is fun

Pretty stellar shot for a telephoto lens. Been hemming and hawing about whether to get one, this photo just sealed the deal for me.

Thanks! I bought one a year ago, but returned it thinking it was just another garbage zoom (jack of all trades master of none). But for the last year it's always been on my mind....I've seen pretty phenomenal results of others online who owned the lens, so I took the plunge again! I couldn't be happier. Maybe I had a bad copy the first time around, or maybe it wasn't clicking with the body I was using at the time, or maybe it was just me, who knows. As far as I'm concerned it's the cat's meow.

I have some more testing to do, but if my feelings are confirmed, I might contemplate selling my 70-200 f2.8 II IS and using this 100-400 as my go to lens.

I also own both lenses and would not give up either one. Sometimes you need the speed of the 70-200mm and not necessarily the reach.
