7DmkII, 100 - 400 MK II, will a 1.4 MKII or MK III? Have the above camera and lens combo looking at 1.4 extenders would the version 2 work just fine or do I need to save my pennies...

The ver. 2 works great for me, It is slightly sharper than the version 1.

I have the same combo and have used both the 1.4II and 1.4III. The III allows faster AF, especially at F/8 that you will be forced to use with your 7DII. The difference in AF speed was enough that it was noticeable. I shoot mostly birds so rapid AF is a definite asset. I do not think there was much difference in IQ, at least not to my eyes. I now only use the III.

Only use the MIII TC with the MII lens. The MII lens was specifically designed to work and maintain incredible sharpness (Imperceptible quality loss) with only the MIII converter.
Anything else and you are totally wasting money and destroying quality compared to this combination.

PS I use the MIII 2x on my MII lens and can't see any difference in quality so the 1.4x should be even better.

I have same camera and lens. Watched the KEH site for awhile and they had one used. Works fine.

I had a Canon 7D mark II + Canon 100 - 400mm II + Canon 300mm f2.8L IS + Canon 1.4 TC III and could not fault it. For me, it has to be the 1.4 TC III. My advice is check out the second hand market and look for an excellent/mint 1.4 TC III and you may find one at an affordable price. I have bought a number of excellent used lenses, my latest is a Sigma 180mm f2.8 OS macro. Brand new it is £1300.00, but I bought a mint used copy for £800. I have purchased from companies such as Mpb on line and high street shops such as London Camera Exchange. Just make sure the seller is reputable with a no quibble exchange policy and warranty.

Norman, different body I use an 80D. I have the older Canon 100-400mm lens, the first one with IS. Kept looking for a TC 1.4 and ended up with a Canon 1.4 III TC. Bought it local, used for $275 out the door. Works great on the 100-400mm and when used on my Canon 200mm f 2.8 (no IS) the sharpness is out of this world. I just posted some photos with these lenses and TC on the "Close Up" forum. I shoot mainly birds and other wildlife and need to remember the 200mm with 1.4 is just excellent. I usually buy only used equipment and have not had a lemon as of now. I go to my local camera shops along with the three shops via the internet that are recommended here (B&H, KEH, and Adorama).

Just a personal note that certainly can be contested...

I sent my purchase back to Amozon recently. The 1.4 mkiii did not cut it for me. I did spend time with micro adjustments and testing under several condition's and hoped for better results.

Cropping an image with the 70-200 f/2.8 is II proved to be sharper than the extender. I was surprised.

I had read several article's that had that claim but had to prove it for myself.

The loss of light was a negative as well. Just too many compromises for no real gain.
