10 shot sequence of a tube ride

It's rare that the waves form in a "tube" and even more rare to capture a "tube ride" with a camera. I had my camera on what I call "machine gun mode" and shot away while capturing this 10 shot sequence of a tube ride. Part luck, part skill! To give you an idea, these photos all happened within a 3 second time span. Please download them for more detail.

Mate this guy really had to work hard with this pincher. Interesting and yes rare to get with a still. Man I have to get off my arse and get to the coast.
Just set myself up with a new telly so there is no excuse. Thanks for the motivation Brent.

Yes ozdude, that guy really did have to work hard with that pincher! As you can tell by the final two shots, he did come out and was successful. He was worked the entire tube ride and if it was any longer he could have used a snorkel! Hahahaha! I'm glad that my sequence has started up some motivation for you to get out there to the coast. Where you live, I presume there is no surf due to the Moreton Bay blocking off the waves. Tell me how it went getting to the coast and surf!

Wow! Brent there is little doubt as to where your forte resides...
Rule Number One when shooting sports... Know your sport!

Brent thinking you are ready to migrate to video at this juncture...
At 60P played back at 30fps this would be amazing!
Go for it!

Thank you for sharing your keen appreciation and knowledge base of this aquatic sport...
I wish you well on your journey Brent

Thank you Thomas for your encouragement to move into video and your kind comments about my favorite subject and the photos I take of the surfers.

Hey Brent the Roxy Pro is on at the moment at the Gold Coast but I will leave that for the pro's haha. Too many bodies to cope with. Can't believe Slater is still carving the young guys up at over 40. What a beast!

Yeah ozdude, I like photographing the pros when they come to Lower Trestles here in So. Cal. for the contests. Slater is amazing. I don't think there is another sport where one individual dominates his sport the way he does. He has 11 championships and I think the next closest person is a guy down under where you live called Mick Fanning who has 3 championships I believe. Slater just announced that he will be on tour next year.

Brent I never shot surfing but it looks like you have all the tools to do a great job.
What is your equipment your using?
I am originally from Southern Calif. and with my work I never had the time to shoot the wild surf. Good job.

Chuck, this sequence of photos was not a contest. The surfers that are in contests are really good and I have a much higher sucess rate with them for photos just as long as there are some kind of good waves. You can look it up online. It's the Huntington Beach contests to look up online. I'm sure you will find something if you just google it.
THanks for liking my surf photos the way you do.

Jules Karney, the equipment I use is a Canon 6D with a Tamron 150-600mm zoom. I hand hold them and my settings are done in manual and at high resolution so I can crop and not get pixels showing. My settings are usually something like this (depending upon how bright it is outside): shutter speed 1000th of a sec, F8, ISO 400. I put the camera in what I call "machine gun mode" (4.5 FPS) and on "al servo" to track the surfer when focusing. I've had good results especially when the waves cooperate. Contact me sometime and we can meet at the Huntington Beach Pier and shoot together.

But you never know. If we met you could teach me what to look for when shooting surfing.
