We are driving out there on Monday, the 20th.
Hoping to avoid the crowds by going on a weekday.
Was the bloom as spectacular as "advertised"?

Nobody seems to have answered your question, but by now you should have seen for yourself.
So tell us, was it as spectacular as "advertised"??

It was spectacular in two regards:
1) Flower display - it was amazing and as advertised.
2)
Crowds!! We've never seen it so crowded, and this was on a Monday (and not a holiday). We couldn't even drive all the way to the Visitor's Center. They had closed that main road. People were being directed by a traffic cop to side roads where they were parking and then hiking to the Visitor's Center. We drove elsewhere since we knew our way around and were able to get away from the hoards, although not completely..
I always fill sorry for the permanent residents of Borrego Springs whenever there is a desert bloom, but I'm sure they are used to it by now...
The ocotillo were not really in bloom yet, but the flower fields were pretty amazing:
Desert verbena (sis and husband)
Fields of gold...(download and click to see people in the field taking pictures)
