From Saturday's Bodybuilding Photoshoot -- warning: Near Nudity

Here are a few pics from this past Saturday's photo shoot with a local bodybuilder. He is 50 years old, an instructor and trainer at a local gym, a karate expert, and many other things. Oh, he is also very intelligent and a pleasant person.

I have noticed something interesting about photographers. Some photographers are very comfortable shooting landscapes and things, but are very uncomfortable photographing people, whether fully clothes or in various state of undress. Others -- a small number -- enjoy photographing people. I am not necessarily talking here about nude photos, just about photos of other human beings. I suggested to a group of very good photographers that we all chip in and hire a model sometime and see how each one views that person through the lens. They all seemed nervous about trying this.

Sounds like a great idea. I might bring it up at my photo club meeting. Pics are awesome by the way. Looks like just natural lighting on an overcast day, or am I missing something? Nice job.

To me, setting is often important. It is nice to have a good setting. Sometimes I focus much more closely to the face, but in this case I wanted the scene.

These photos were taken at a location where I have photographed a number of times and know the lighting very well. You have to wait until after 3 pm, when the setting is entirely in what I would call "bright shade." If you photograph too early, you get mixed patches of shade and sunlight, which really spoils the results.

I agree, the setting is good and appropriate.

The lighting is great. Mottled sunshine would definately spoil it.

Caught the animal inside.

I love the lighting. Even, but with some soft highlights.

The interesting thing is that he has a beautiful, balanced personality, including a much higher degree of serenity than most bodybuilders (and believe me I have met hundreds). He practices meditation and is widely traveled, which also contribute to this.

It takes a fair amount of work to find good places to shoot. It took me half a day of roaming around in the general area of this place until I discovered it. Sometimes I literally get into my car and explore the surrounding countryside to see what the possibilities are. And once you do find a place, then you have to think about where the sun will be and at what time of day you should be shooting at a spot. For instance, anytime before around 3 p.m. at this waterfall location a subject is mottled with daubs of sunlight and shade, which ruins one's photos.
